New research also tallies ‘record number of studio closures’

The global game industry has been hit by as many as 11,500 job losses since late 2008, a new study suggests.

Research by entertainment analyst group M2 Research says that “the final count for layoffs since the economic meltdown in late 2008 reached 11,488 worldwide, with the majority of the losses coming in 2009.”

The study has identified staff redundancies from 95 individual studios, adding that 52 of the affected studios were situated in the US.

M2 adds that the majority of layoffs come at “studio level”, with QA staff often being the first to go.

The analysis group adds that 2009 saw a ‘record number’ of studio closures, including 3D Realms (pictured), various Midway studios and EA’s Pandemic Studios.

Specifically, the research claims that it found 18 studio closures last year – a total number which, on appearance, suggests that the study may have missed a few closures.

The study adds, however, that more studios had filed for bankruptcy and went up for sale.

A large portion of layoffs seems to have come from projects and companies that had difficulty ‘retooling’ for current-gen consoles, the study adds.

“Aside from the cost of retooling, others were so focused on their retooling efforts they weren't able to see the changes in the market and the impact things like digital distribution, casual, and social gaming was starting to have on the market.”

Ooh, sorry to hear that man. Where'd you work, and what were you doing? More importantly, do you have any hot prospects lined up?



Insane figures. The industry is definitely in trouble and budgets have gotten unsustainable without the investor capital to back it up.

I suspect we'll see some more publishers closures and buyouts over the next year. Kinda weird that Japanese publishers and developers seem generally unscathed though, given their market's the one that's been in supposed decline?



Found this list of devs in the GAF thread on this, pretty startling stuff... are we in the midst of a 3rd crash?

Pretty much.

The population of mainstream gamers hasn't grown that much (if at all), certainly not enough to justify the enormous jump in development costs from last gen. Hell for all we know for certain the population of that type of gamer may have gotten smaller. It would definitely explain the ridiculous levels of sequelitis and safe moves this generation.

The funny thing is now people are talking about 3D gaming being the future of games as if that won't jack up development costs to the point where there's even less games and less companies making them.

So yes, I think this gen was a mistake overall. There wasn't enough HD penetration at the beginning to justify making HD consoles, and they should have gone with something more easily sustainable and saved the HD jump for the 2011/2012 generation.

Of course now this generation is going to go on for a long time, but not before the industry receives a super-mega-enema for heading face first down a path no one was really ready for financially.



HD strikes with a vengeance.

Again, everyone seems to base everything entirely on choosing the "wrong" platforms to develop for and completely ignore the fact that we've had a second depression and recession that brought entire nations to their knees and even rendered some bankrupt, killed half the world's largest banks, several big car manufacturers, punctured the real estate market and generally made thousands upon thousands of companies go under and probably cost several million their jobs.
When viewed in context, the gaming industry has done quite well for itself compared to many other industries and many of the affected ones were in dire straits long before this generation started.

The woes of the world cannot solely be blamed on evil, shiny graphics.
