Rumor: Retailers Say No, Thanks To Wii Mini Game Collections

A Gamasutra article published late last week carries an interesting rumour; namely, that two of America's biggest retailers have told publishers they won't be stocking any more Wii mini game compilations.

Gama's Paul Hyman writes "Stores like Target and Best Buy have reportedly told game publishers not to even bother approaching them with collections of mini games, which they will no longer pick up."

If true, it's a welcome move, though probably far too late to have any impact on the Wii's image as a haven for cheap shovelware.

Also makes you wonder where they'll draw the line, as some of those "collections of mini games" - like T2's Carnival Games series - have actually sold well. Real well.

Considering how well those sell I doubt it.

I really don't understand why people are so against those type of games.  If you don't like them, don't buy them.

I read about this on Go Nintendo I think. But it's good news.

No point in doing this, this late, but I guess its good news.

Odd. Future. Wolf. Gang. Kill. Em. All. OFWGKTA Don't give a fuck!

Fuck Steve Harvey. FREE EARL!

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be the GREATEST game EVER made!!!

I'd take a bullet for Square-Enix!

hey Simulacrum I love that mario gif in your sig. Is there like a full length video fo that you could point me in the direction to?

On topic, I also think this is great news. We've all been saying for ages now these games are spoiling the wii but we havent had any power to do anything. If retailers say no then developers might get the hint.

If at first you don't succeed, you fail

Well its true you can get games like Mario,Zelda,Metroid etc on Wii but what you find on stores are these crappy games. Its rare to find Zelda/Metroid on most stores.

@Snow I don't know.

The whole point about "news" is that it's supposed to be new.

It's perhaps because even the market for those games isn't buying them as much. They've become a red ocean genre. Now they are low cost unlike FPS, but for stores that is irrelevant. The sales for those aren't as much because of the saturation. Plus more dedicated expanded market games, like Let's Dance (not partying, just dancing), We Cheer, are selling better, along with even "Core" games that actually sell to traditional gamers (like Modern Warfare).

For the retailers, those are better choices.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

On topic, minigame collections can die in a hellpit of fire from satan's ass.

I think this is a case of stores saying they are not going to sell everything.
Target has never carried more than a small subset of Wii games (maybe 70 titles at any one time).
Best Buy has more (obviously) but no where near all.

Not every game gets stocked by every store. So this is not really surprising.
