When you "proof" something against something, you look to insure it not having that. Like waterproofing or fireproofing means that an item doesn't have that (water or fire). So, in light of this, considering where Sony priced the PS3 originally, due to the BluRay player, there was a definite possibility the Playstation brand wouldn't have a future.

There is no such thing as "futureproofing" because if you try to speculate what the future has, you will likely end up getting it wrong and force the consumer to buy stuff they don't want.

Who cares? The stuff that is compressed (audio and video, mostly) has virtually no quality loss from the compression (no matter how many PS3 fanatics tell us they can tell MGS4 uses uncompressed audio... on their crappy TV speakers).

Think I will hold off on updating my DVD collection for a little while yet then !

I did say 20+ years... not last gen. All generations start in the 5-7 years area.

2012 will be the next-gen. E3 2011 you will know.
