When you "proof" something against something, you look to insure it not having that. Like waterproofing or fireproofing means that an item doesn't have that (water or fire). So, in light of this, considering where Sony priced the PS3 originally, due to the BluRay player, there was a definite possibility the Playstation brand wouldn't have a future.
There is no such thing as "futureproofing" because if you try to speculate what the future has, you will likely end up getting it wrong and force the consumer to buy stuff they don't want.
