Forums - Gaming - A question about handhelds

Hello there guys

I am interested in buying a handheld but I have no idea which one(PSP or NDS). I also heard rumors about PSP2 and DS2(or whatever they will be called). I have to travel by train a lot though the trips aren't that long(2-4 hours) I am always bored and I used to have a handheld when I was younger. Now these are the following things that are important for me:

1. The games

I am a huge fan of the mario series and such but at the same time I also interested in trying new things, new games and such! I guess I wouldn't be dissappointed by the games of the NDS but I was wondering about the PSP. How awesome are the games? Do they last long, are they fun and challenging? And can you recommend me some good ones? Same goes with DS I know some good games like New super mario bros, Legend of zelda, Mario kart etc. But I would love to know more great ones.

2. Which version of the handhelds

There are 2 versions of each one I think but are the upgraded versions worth it? And what about the next gen handhelds? When will those come? I mean if the wait takes too long I rather buy one of them now(I only got peggle as a game on my Iphone but there is only so much peggle a person can play ~~).

3. Battery

The life of the batteries don't matter that much to me but the thing I hate about my Iphone is that after a certain about of charges the battery doesn't work as good as it used to. I had to send my Iphone to Apple to get brand new batteries. How does that work with the handhelds can you replace the battery yourself? Can you use normal batteries(you know the ones that go into your remote and such).

4. Backward compatibility

Would you be able to play PSP games or NDS games of the next version of them? Like playing NDS games on NDS2 or isn't not known yet?

5. Controls

Sometimes the train can get a bit bumpy or shaky or whatever you want to call it. I missed a lot of great peggle shots because of that but I was wonder about the DS stylus would it matter a lot or are the games still perfectly playable?

I love to try new things, new experiences and such therefore I haven't been able to decide this for myself. My head says buy a DS but at the same time I am thinking I might miss out on a lot of great gaming experiences I haven't had before that are on the PSP. Any advice is welcome.

Nintendo Ds hands down. The Ds has a great selection of impressive games. Although the graphics are not nearly as good as the psp's they still are pretty good for a handheld. The battery life is excellent too. No one knows exactly what the next generations' handheld market will be like but guessing off of recent trends, the Ds 2 would be more likely to have backwards compatibility because of the psp's umd drive and Nintendo is really good at keeping backwards compatibility (except for the Dsi, Dang it).

I like both, I have a DS and DSi, my brother has a PSP 3000. They are both really fun to play, but I prefer the ds. I'm almost certain the next ds will be compatible with DS games. As for the version, DSi has the flipnote studio, and I always use the camera when I travel. Other DSi excluxive games I'm not sure if they justify the purchase, and DSiware hasn't provided amazing exclusives
