SE and Media Molecule

But Nintendo will never do this, as games made by these teams usually have "niche" success: they won't spend millions for games with a 200k-500k potential only... but they did it with Monolith, so who knows... |
The point is that acquiring such studios, while not necessarily bringing in mega sellers, will help diversify console offerings without having to rely on third parties, and so help sell more consoles.
The way I see it, among the "core" market that doesn't have the Wii, there are two groups - those who will never buy a Wii no matter what, and those who would buy it if there were enough games of the type the are looking for. Buying such studios could help bring over that group to Nintendo.

I vote AGAINST Rare.
Though they share the same name, they are not the same Rare that was joined at the hip of Nintendo during the N64 Glory Days. They aren't quite as badly faded as SEGA is right now, but they aren't far off.
Nintendo could pursue some of the individuals who were in charge of Rare during those days and have subsequently broke off from the company. That would be okay.
I have to agree with Grasshopper, Vanillaware, Nextlevel and Treasure. They have to find a way to keep the talent there though so it may cost them a bit more than normal. I would also consider High Voltage. Those guys have talent maybe they just need someone to pressure them like Nintendo did with Retro.

I miss Rare but I honestly don't want them back because Rare has gone downhill since they were with Nintendo and I only miss Banjo-Kazooie from them.(DK I stoped missing and StarFox can be made by Nintendo)
I want them to buy Hudson.
Buy all the studios that were set up by people who splintered off from the old Rare, people like Hollis, Doak and the Stamper Bros.
That would be even better than buying back Rare!

buying a large third party isn't a good idea because it's just not worth the investment since they would have to pay a lot of money for such thing.
small independent Japanese studios are ideal of acquisition. American studios don't like to be tied to a single company.
I'd love to see developers like Level-5 and Vanillaware work on their franchises as well as new IPS.
I thought Nintendo might make an acquisition of one of Sony's studios last year as they were getting into financial trouble, but I've since learned more about how Nintendo thinks about acquisitions. They're only likely to buy up a smaller company if that company is amenable to Nintendo's design philosophies, and even then they don't do it often, as when they do they put a lot of energy into molding the developer into a 'Nintendo' developer.
In that light, you'd have to think about what studios might align with Nintendo's ideas.
