3D Mario can be pitted against perhaps Ratchet and Clank series minus the shooting I guess but the platforming elements are soooo much fun as well. Funny people mention NSMBW as if it has done anything new outside and outfit or 2 and the multiplayer element which was way overdue anyways.

Going by your logic, then every R&C game is the same fucking game over and over. All it adds are 8 new weapons each game. That is it. Would you care to admit to that or are you a damn hypocrite?

SMB3 was the revolutionizing Mario title. All NSMBW did was take most of its inspiration from SMB3 (best in series) and make nods to the other Mario's, THAT'S IT! It's the same over and over again and anyone who doesn't see that is blinded by the fact that it's a long standing franchise and mascot of Nintendo.

No, it is not the same over and over. It has different features, different mechanics, different powerups, different levels. It's the same for every sequel. What do you want, for the game to change its basic premise so that it isn't just more platforming which you so seem to despise. Would you rather it be a shooter? You're fucking calling out that it has the same premise when every sequel does that.

LBP is the better platformer as it also has alot of puzzles that use the physics elements very well. And funny you mention the "play/create/share are not prerequisite for being a platformer" when that in itself adds depth to the point you can pretty much mimic anything in the 2D Mario series if you choose to or break away from anything created.

Totally irrelevant points.

It's like saying the minigames in SMB3 or the choosing a different path in SMB3 are not prerequisite for being a platformer, when in fact those are elements that add further depth just like LBP's level creation and challenging others to try out your levels and multiple challenges. Hell if you choose to you can create the platformer of your dreams.

Still not much relevance.

There is not much level variety to NSMB or NSMBW as it all has been rehashed from SMB1 and SMB3 down to the switching sides of the screen. To another extent almost anything in the Ratchet and Clank can also rival it.

You're fucking kidding right? Grass, desert, ice, sky, water, mountain, jungle, lava, and Star world. It's not just rehashed levels, each and EVERY level is new and was thought out by the Nintendo team. And it does not matter what you think can rival it, your personal opinion does not matter in factual debates.

In short, would you like me to be "more descriptive?". Would you like me to go more in depth, or even bring out games from the 16 bit era that were also of higher quality? See I try to be open minded when it comes to games.

Yeah right.

I wasn't one that would sit and play Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest and ignored the rest of the RPG's such as Xenogears, Valkyrie Profile, Wild Arms, Vagrant Story, Suikoden, Legend of Legaia etc. I break away from being the typical blinded person that clings to whatever mascot my favorite system has.

Just because you're a rampant non-conformist doesn't make those games any better. Just because it doesn't have Final Fantasy in the title doesn't automatically make it awesome.

I had a PS1 and never owned an N64, but that never stopped me from sleeping over my cousin's house to play OOT and Majora's Mask, nor the countless drunk nights playing some Golden Eye and Perfect Dark. I recognize quality over anything else. I dislike the xbox and what it represents as far as M$'s other attempt at cornering another market, but that didn't stop me from enjoying Jade Empire, Advent Rising, KOTOR or Fable 1, and then the 360 with Gears of War 1 and to a lesser extent Halo 3 and LO.

I thought you were open-minded?

As much as I love Uncharted series or Demon's Souls, or anything Sony exclusive, it will never blind me from recognizing the next better game that comes from other systems because I am a gamer first, unlike many I see here.

You like anything Sony exclusive? Well that gives me my opinion on you, you Sony-adhering, Nintendo bashing, blind gamer.

In short, shut up.

I expect myself to be banned in a minute but oh well.......AWWWWWW I just hurt the little Wii fanboy's feelings? What's the matter little Ninty fanboy? Miyamoto made you hop off his a little too early cuz he's planning on making another Mario spinoff? And I love how you state that I love anything Sony exclusive considering I already mentioned games from other systems that I thoroughly enjoy, oh and I did forget to mention RE4 on the Wii so there you go so that way you can love me a little more. I'm sorry for "bashing" Mario, I guess his mustache on your thing feels THAT good. Then again he's Italian, and well Italians are known to be great in bed so yea :). Anyways, hope you enjoy waggling that control while you get the Mario mustache treatment silly fanboy. Also funny that you mention that the games I named aren't any better considering they are good to high rated. Also last I checked Vagrant Story was like 9.6 on Gamespot. Oh but wait, it wasn't on a Nintendo system, so sooooorryyyyyy little fanboy.

In our words...."in short, shut up" :).

Wow, just wow. You make it seem like a complete and utter crime to be a market success that people actually like.  You also make it seem like being different in itself is more important than anything else.

First, I can appreciate a few PS1, PS2, Xbox and PSP titles.  I enjoyed Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout, Soul Calibur 3, Jet Set Radio Future, and Loco Roco quite a bit.

Second, I love playing games but playing something different doesn't make a game better.  To be honest, is a major difference in Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction from a Crack in Time?  At the cost of sounding like a broken record, being different is not a prerequisite for being a good game.  You may have enjoyed Xenogears and such more than Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest because they're different but it's more much more important to have better execution, pacing, and polish to a better game.  If it's a crime to be just a tad like its predecessor, NSMBW and NSMB are guilty as charged but they offer experiences which depth can't be fully appreciated in the first playthrough.  Believe it or not, NSMBW and NSMB have physics that make the precision platforming much more satisfying to pull off time and time again that Sackboy's floaty controls just can't compare.

Also, who the hell do you think you are to say someone isn't a gamer first?

Finally, sorry for the late response, my brother needed me for a moment.

See you're not a blatant fanboy and that's fine, you can appreciate games regardless of a system, and I perhaps may have come out like a dick to an extent. It isn't a crime to like Mario at all, but for 20+ years it has been the same over and over with a tiny thing here and there. A transformation isn't expected from 1 game to the next, I mean look at Uncharted 1 and 2, there isn't MUCH difference except polish and better execution. But all the way back from SMB3 and NSMBW there isn't much difference except multiplayer and couple of added costumes if that. R&C ACIT outside of weapons also added playing as Clank and the whole time manipulation thing to bring even further depth to an already great series with a wonderful story.

My attack when I talked about gamer first are for those that are complete blinded fanboys that can't appreciate anything that isn't called Mario. Next up Mario dating game and I am sure it would get eaten up.

Many times doing something different is what helps titles stand out. Look at Vagrant Story, many times believed to be better than almost ANY final fantasy game (even got a nod in FFXII). Look at RE4, especially on the Wii. It completely broke away from the traditions of the RE series and it is often considered the best in series (especially the Wii version). Look at the KoF series. Who would have thought that the 3v3 fighting system would have taken so many arcades by storm and then arriving on home consoles? Castlevania: SOTN it took elements from its previous games and just made them better in every way, from original Castlevania as well as Simon's Quest. Anyways, it was nice debating with you but I am about to get banned cuz this other stupid blinded fanboy forced it outta me. Take care.

@onikenshi: no need to go nuts on poor dtewi. take a deep breath and calm down

2D Mario... Little Big Planet Sonic & Knuckles. Sega does what Nintendon't!

3D Mario... Nothing yet. And looking at current 3D Sonic titles, there never will be.

There Carl, I helped you out with the greatest 2D Platformer ever.

Sonic and Knucled on it's own won't beat any Mario game. I mean a smurf zone for first level? What was wrong with green hills and geometric shapes?

You should have said Sonic 3 & Knuckles or Sonic CD, then we can talk about games that have the potential to rival Mario.

First of all, reported for flaming Smurfs. What have they ever done to you?

Second of all, Mushroom Hill Zone was awesome. But I will admit that as far as first levels go, Angel Island and Emerald Hill Zone were pretty darn awesome(r).

But I don't need Sonic 3 or Sonic CD to help me out. I already have Sky Sanctuary Zone, the greatest stage in Sonic (and gaming) history.

b, but Mushroom Hill looks like it belongs in the smurfs and not Sonic I didn't mean anything bad about the smurfs :(

Anyways to me, the best starting stages in a Sonic game are Palmtree Panic and Green Hill Zone, they're just so much more stylish than the other starting stages, and Palmtree Panic Bad future is the coolest stage in a Sonic game ever, period. Seeing how Green Hill Zone would look like if it was taken over and robotisized by Robotnik is awesome.

And S3&K has Sky sanctuary, wich is awesome, and it has Ice Cap Zone and the Marble Garden boss and Hydrocity wich are awesome too :) Carnival Night is a BIG minus though.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Oh wait, there is also RATCHET & CLANK...I really havent enjoyed a mario game since MARIO 3, and sony franchises like R&C, JAK & DAXTER and of corse LBP , have all replaced the need for me to ever want to play another mario game....not saying that mario is a bad game now, but my taste for it has deminished....

why does everyone feel the need to keep saying how they don't like mario anymore and how some other game is supposedly better? seriously people... >_>

and lol at the fact that the OP thinks mario can be "killed" that easily. what a nice idea for a thread... better luck on your next one though

Gaming is an entertainment media and as such some things are bond to stroke cords more with some people than with others.  You also have to be wary of where a series or a series foundation can be changed before it becomes something fans don't want.  Castlevania: Symphonia of the Night is a game that borrows elements from Super Metroid and such and may very well be a better game for it but there are people like James Rolfe who prefer Super Castlevania 4.  Also, while Resident Evil 4 may have ditched the tank-like controls of its predecessors but there are still people who preferred 1, 2, and/or 3.  Ultimately, gaming is an community of different opinions.

I love Mario because its straight-forwardness(at least in the 2D titles).  Mario, much any other playable character in any game is just an avatar for which the player interacts with the software.  A Mario dating sim would be quite awesome but it would be for its gameplay, charm, pacing and such rather than the fact that Mario being the main character.

Innovation is quite nice.  Setting yourself apart is too.  But none of that directly increases the enjoyance of a game.  Ratchet and Clank can have writing that makes Shakespheare seem inadequate but for me, Story is just a barrier between me and the software which I must tolerate until I'm actually playing the game again.

Pixel Art can be fun.
