I thought 300,000 +, but I was wrong, so, whats the big deal, now if the games does it poorly in the rest of the free world(Unlikely), well, thats a problem...

*GULP*
I thought it sell 1/2 million first week Japan.
*Swallows some more crow*
There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.
I will also admit to being wrong. The Japanese market is wacky nowadays.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/
I was waaaaayy more off. I said ~750k first week. Anyways, this game will keep stead during holiday period and reach 1m in Japan by 2007 end.
My themeforest portfolio:
Me too, I was one of the people questioning the 1st day sales, because I'd swore it would have hit at the very least 500,000 for the first week. I did though think this not because I over estimated the Mario brand, but because of the so called 700,000 preorders the game received.
Prior to that I did wonder if the whole planetoid nature of this game would hurt it's sales, I see why casuals picked up NSMB for the DS but this looks far more complex then your classic mario experience and may have pushed casual gamers away from trying it.
I guess nonetheless 300,000 is a good first week and if the game has legs it could be another million seller in Japan. Now I still do expect more from Mario in the US so we'll have to see how next week goes.
I think there's something to be learned here: That the Japanese market is in some form of transition, and we haven't seen where that will end up. I think even non-Nintendo fans were expecting somewhat higher sales than this.
I now officially have concerns about the Wii's future in Japan. Though I'm also now excited about the 360 and the PS3 starting to move a little - I'd rather see a market with three consoles selling mediocrely than the Wii selling medicorely and the PS3 and 360 selling shittily.
I was wrong about the launch numbers and first week numbers. However SMG will be the hottest title around during Christmas in Japan on the hottest console. Expect this game to be the number 1 game during the rest of the year untill Wii Fit arrives.

It's unusual because big games generally have huge openings. I'm not saying it's terrible, just not what was predicited. The reatailers themselves prepared for 700k, and they arent ususally that far off. |
And how can you say which game is big and which is not?
The retailers prepared 700k and I think that they will sell those 700k eventually. I don't think they just order games for one week sales.
I was wrong too. I expected much higher numbers... but everyone did, right? I don't remember seeing any prediction below 200k.
Maybe the japanese don't like huge console games anymore. They seem to be crazy for portable and/or far simpler games now.
