Starcraft and Diablo are not bigger than Halo.

oh yes they are. Is halo 1 still sold as new in well practically all stores that deal with video games ? and even many stores that don't ? for a 4th of its original retail price ? Diablo 1 and 2 are both. So is diablo 2s expansion. Sure halo games may have more total sales than diablo but diablo 2 alone has sold more than 10 million copies.

Same thing with starcraft.

I thought the comparison was referring to over-the-top launches, marketing promotions, and merchandise.

Starcraft might be bigger than Halo in the States as well... in all honesty, there is no point in debating it - the proof will be in the pudding so to speak one way or another here in March when SC2 finally launches.

I think he might be right considering the fanbase. The fanbase for Star Wars and Halo (you can call them nerds) are very hardcore. They are getting everything connected to Halo or Star Wars. Mario is bigger, but does not have a hardcore fanbase, because of the casual character.

I hate to break it to you guys, but Star Wars didn't invent science fiction, and Harry Potter didn't change literature.

What they did do was appeal to people who lived beyond their respective niches. Star Wars wasn't just a science fiction movie, it was a human drama. Harry Potter wasn't just a dumb book about wizards or something, it was a character that children could relate to and care about.

I don't care for Halo much at all, and I certainly don't want to get into a debate on how much influence it has had, but you've gotta look at it in a really specific way. Even if Halo didn't do anything new (which I don't believe, by the way) it has established itself as the kind of franchise that people notice. Not just people who love Halo, but people who like games in general. And that goes beyond seeing an advertisement or hearing your friend talk about it. As much as I have liked Mario games in the past, and as recognizable a character as Mario is, I don't know if you can say the same thing about the Mario franchise these days.

Yeah, people still love Mario, but it's not about that. Plenty of people wanted to play NSMB Wii, and plenty of people enjoyed the hell out of it, but the release date wasn't an event. It's not even really about sales, it's about perception. Star Wars and Harry Potter have the perception of being a big fucking deal.

I don't think you realize how big Halo is.

The 10 million number were from years ago. Halo also sold many copies after it dropped in price, no doubt. You also seemed to avoid my other points. If you cannot debate, then just stop.

What starwars did was innovate massively in movies with the way it was made. It treaded new grounds in special effects and things like that.
