Final Fantasy was never a series to be stuck into a same JRPG conception, even in the early days, don't forget that FFII was one of the first overall JRPG to actually put up a Job-like system in which you had to train every stat and every weapon in order to evolve.

The main problem between established franchises going beyond the complete borders of what they achieve in past games is the alienation of their entire fan base.
Final Fantasy have always been a series about changes and different approaches to the JRPG genre, but never have they strayed away from it, it's an entire different ball game to go for an entire new genre.

ff8 for example, best jrpg ever, but people hated it, because they wanted ff VII 2 CLOUD REvange.

Guys FINAL FANTASY may change drastically with each installment, but it still caries it traditions/staples...all of them do.. FF changes the main world/setting everytime but the staples are always there

Reasoning:
- The Japanese would never buy a western made title even if it was a Japanese name.
- The only Final Fantasy Square Enix should ever put in the hands of Western devs is MMO's (because the Japanese suck at Sandbox and MMO's).
- Western Devs apply both worlds of roleplaying and Storytelling.....the Japanese want 100% focus on storytelling.
- The Japanese want emo kids while western devs today are giving more variety.
- Western devs give choice and help you shape out the story, whilst Japanese devs wont as it throws off their story.

Speaking of emo, I always wondered how on earth people can identify themselves with characters in JRPGs.

I find the characters in JRPGs totally uninteresting and out of this world.

Are JRPG-lovers emo themselves? Or they like to identify themselves with and/or feel sympathy for emo characters?

Imagine Western Final Fantasy!
- First Person Shooter
- 95% grey and brown

- EVERYONE is on steroids!
- a storyline that is as interesting as a dump
- Over 28,000 irrelevant questions to answer to determine whether you are good or evil (good people use magic arrows, bad people use lightning)
- Magic damage is calculated by dice
- It would be totally uber/Epic/1337/hardcore!!!

lightning torturing some ramdom npc.

horrible characters and city desings.

snow torturing some ramdom npc.

black guy in ff replace it for some gta or mw sterotype.

lightning killing inocent npcs for no good reason

the american empire invading some place(mass effect, halo, etc, etc)

apocaliptic american empire (borderlands, fallout, rage, etc, etc)

fighting giant rats.

ramdom gay sex scene.

ramdom controversial scene( like in mw "yes, we are so mature XD"

Huge hands

Blank as hell character expressions

Characters designed after drug addicts

Lack of any type of happiness

Takes a long time to level (and the subsequent caps are reasonably easy to reach)

ooo no, in JRPG's u aren't meant 4 you to identitfy with thecharacters , there their own identities you are watching the story unfold with them through there vie

I don't know why everyone thinks it would become another version of Oblivion. Bethesda's the only developer who makes those kind of huge open world games, there are plenty of WRPGs that do not follow this trend.

On a sidenote, it's hilarious to see people trashing WRPGs here that completely ignore the faults of JRPGs.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

So it's like vlad's been saying then - JRPGs is just like reading a book, but in best case a mediocre book. He prefers to get his good stories from reading books or watching movies. I might disagree with him a bit though, as in my opinion game developers are quite decent at creating interesting stories.
