Great numbers for most! |
I was going to say the same for PSP and Wii. :P

No where near a bigger difference than what has happened with PS3 and Wii. 2007 numbers following...
Wii - 3,677,579 PSP - 3,061,395 PS3 - 1,218,612
2008...
PSP - 3,639,073 Wii - 2,888,251 PS3 - 1,000,838
2009...
PSP - 2,282,912 Wii - 1,987,526 PS3 - 1,795,568
I think 2010 could see PS3 > Wii in Japan.

PS3 best year vs. Wii worst year = Wii > PS3 by a sizeable margin.
This is why I don't share your prediction. I think PS3 peaked this year.
|
Isn't it alarming that the Wii had its worst year though, despite the biggest console game this gen (NSMB Wii). Monster Hunter 3, Black Wii, Pricecut, Tales of Graces, Wii Sports Resort/ Wii Fit Plus? I think the downward trend of Wii will continue, although it wont be too much lower. Of course though, if DQX releases... Plenty of crow coming my way.
Then though, what does Wii have confirmed in 2010?... I can name a whole bunch of moderately big games on PS3 in Q1/Q2 alone. Would like to know the Wii lineup if someone can help?

Well, the reason for that is the massive decline in the first half. 2nd half (ie: when all those factors you just listed actually came into play) Wii had a a generally flat or better performance than 2007 or 2008.
And despite dropping massively, Wii's been narrowing the difference between it and PSP. Last year they were nearly 800k apart, this year that's down to 300k. Pretty notable, if Wii continues it's 2nd half turnaround and PSP continues it's general decline (which was consistent YOY bar a brief relief from the pricedrop), we'll see Wii overtake it for 2nd place next year.
|
Exactly... And that massive decline could very well happen again this year with the seeming lack of big SW releasing.
Look at 2007 sales where Wii outsold PSP by over 600k, and you will see how it isn't really surprising. But anyway, as i said... The difference between Wii and PS3 is of greater significance. Wii outsold PS3 by over 1.8 Million consoles in 2008. Wii outsold PS3 by 200k consoles in 2009.

Last year's decline was on the back of Nintendo's disappointing 2nd half lineup for 2008, it was the failure of Wii Music and Animal Crossing to maintain momentum as planned. This year's a pretty different situation, with Sports Resort, Fit Plus and (especially) NSMB all heavily driving hardware. Wii's Q1 is pretty uneventful, though by comparison PS3 and PSP are blowing their loads in Q1 (MGS, KH, Yakuza, GT). Even considering all that, the best selling Q1 game will still probably go to a Nintendo system (DQVI).
