Wiiowned!!!

But PS3 put up a good fight though:)

Are we looking at the same numbers?

Yes, but you're looking at it differently. It's all a matter of perspective.

PS3 was up YOY. Despite not having a redesign/relaunch, the Wii won the battle for best selling home console during the year, which is the battle that really matters.

The Wii also had a price drop and NSMB exploded, but still barely outsold the PS3 which did not even sell 1 million console in 2008.

You see, it's all a matter how you look at it.

Didn't PS3 have a $100 price cut (approx in yen) and FFXIII?

Honestly, both consoles got big exclusives this year. MH3, SW3, NSMBWii, and Wii Fit Plus are all big games.

More like DSowned!!!

Looking at sales percentage, this is the outcome:

DS      3978953    38%
PSP    2248171    21%
Wii     1962367    19%
PS3    1764532    17%
X360  373357      4%
PS2    206555      2%

The Wii counted for 19% of total sales, and PS3 counted for 17% of total sales, only 2%... Sure we can bring every argument ("The Wii had NSMBWii and a Price Cut", "The PS3 had a cut, a redesign and FFXIII", the Wii is casual, the PS3 had a flood with SF4, RE5, etc."), the fact is that this is the 1st year that the PS3 has gotten near the Wii, and with a little difference...

Now, like Toretto said "Ask any racer, any real one, it doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile, winning is winning" So the Wii won no matter what, but owning??? i don't think so...

S 3978953 38%
PSP 2248171 21%
Wii 1962367 19%
PS3 1764532 17%
X360 373357 4%
PS2 206555 2%

The Wii/PS3 battle last year was just like the DS/PSP battle in 2008.

Question is...will the PS3 repeat the PSP's performance and drop like a rock?

Everything should be down in 2010 hardware wise.

Wii/PS3 won't be able to match Q4 2009 in Q4 2010. You don't have fall price cuts and Final Fantasy/2D Mario games within four months of each other real often. Wii can beat Q1 2009 and PS3 can beat Q2 2009 I'd say. Q3 2009 is tough for PS3 to beat (150k+ Slim launch). I'd say both will be down about 25%.

DS/PSP will be down even if they get new models. DS may even see a price cut one of these days (years...)

X360/PS2 will probably be down by half each unless PS2 gets a price cut or Natal works super-well in Japan.

PSP dropped more than I thought.

Yep, it's the most under-reported story of 2009.  PSP was nearly neck-and-neck with DS last year, now it's within spitting distance of the lowly consoles.  Pretty huge failure on Sony's part, especially given their recent PSP software push.

ps3 is the most interesting to look at it has the biggest rise and Wii dropped like a rock as for 360 a slight rise PSP awful and ds the same numbers

The PSP lost nearly 1.9 sales for every PS3 sale gained.

When you combine that with the PS2 sales lost, it's has to be considered a huge net loss for Sony. They are declining a lot in overall sales.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

This.

I think PS3 will never match 2009. Slim + FF13 was a deadly combination, unless the 3rd parties all shift towards PS3 exclusively.

The wii will probably annahialate Q1 numbers, adn at least match Q2 numbers( i'm even guessing it will beat Q2). However if nothing releases like what happened in 2008, expect numbers to dreastically fall in Q3, it all depends on how the vitality sensor performs, and whether the first party titles(and 3rd party if there's any) will drive sales. I just hope Nintendo push 3rd parties to helping them because japan is the most dependant on having continuous software releases.

DS is expected to fall, and i think 2009 was its last year of dominance, while the PSP can hold on to 2 mil with MH3 on its way.
