In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!
Baalzamon said: I agree that NES was the innovation and SNES the perfection. But to say that N64 is innovation and GC perfection...not so much. N64 was simply amazing, the games blew everybody away, etc. Gamecube was a complete and utter failure. Because of this, even as a playstation fan, I hope they don't go the same way as they did with N64 then GC, for that would mean the Wii2 would be a complete failure. If it remains similar to Wii with only slightly boosted stuff, I really do think it will be a failure. With what you are saying, the PS3 could still remain competitive to the Wii2...they need something that will make it better than that. |
If I recall correctly, when ODC states innovation and perfection, he is referring to the ideas that were implemented in the controllers and technology, rather than the console or games. An example of this is introducing a simple controller for the NES, and then adding shoulder buttons for the SNES. Perhaps introducing analog with the n64 and then perfecting on that with the gamecube and so on.
At least this is what I remember. Of course, I could be totally off and please correct me if I am ODC.

I don't recall them saying the N64 was superior. 3D gameplay on teh GCN was much better than 3D gameplay on the N64. Hence revolution -> perfection.

Exactly: N64 introduced analog controls and 3D games, and was a real killer in its days, but everything improved with the GC (the most underrated console ever)...
Nostalgia is maybe an important factor to consider the N64 the "best" of both, but really, many "innovative" N64 games are now looking really dated, visually and in the gameplay, while many of the best SNES games are still looking as fresh as ever, and may be viewed as the "pinnacle" of 2D gaming...
N64 was just a start, a very cool and very decent start for 3D gaming, with Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 as all-time greats, amonst maybe ten to twenty other amazing games... but gaming has improved a lot since then, on all consoles, and even in the "limited" library of the GC and the Wii...
