Forums - Nintendo - Zelda Fan Movie Taken Down on Nintendo's Request

Nintendo let the fan-made Legend of Zelda film "The Hero of Time," stay up over the holidays, but its creators have now taken it down after the company asked for its removal.

The Hero of Time (that's one of its trailers above) had been shown at film festivals, and on Dec. 22, had been hosted at DailyMotion. But earlier in the month, the film's creators came to an agreement with Nintendo to stop distributing the movie by the end of the year. "In the spirit of the holiday season they were good enough to let us keep the movie up for you to watch and enjoy through the end of 2009," the team wrote on their blog. "We understand Nintendo's right to protect its characters and trademarks and understand how in order to keep their property unspoiled by fan's interpretation of the franchise, Nintendo needs to protect itself - even from fan-works with good intentions."

The creators say they have "a real sense of peace bringing the project to a close." They indicated a new project is forthcoming, and "no, it's not Majora's Mask."

While it sucks, it is the nature of trademarks that a company has to defend a trademark or it becomes impossible to defend (legally). If Nintendo allows people (companies or individuals) to make a books, movies, videogames, or anything that involves any trademarks without prior approval down the road anyone can infringe on that trademark with Nintendo having no recourse.

Thank goodness, looked awful in my opinion. At any rate, it did have a better looking Link than IGN excuse of an April fools.

Pixel Art can be fun.

It was nice of Nintendo to allow them to keep it till the new year at least. I doubt many others would have even allowed that.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

There's any number of fangames and webcomics out there (a few of them almost professional) that are under threat from this.

- Zelda Classic (Zelda series game editor and engine)
- There Will Be Brawl (Escapist video series)
- Brawl In The Family (Webcomic)
- AM2R (Metroid II Remake)
- IGN's Zelda movie trailer
- ...

Huh. Can I find it anywhere for download or anything or is it pretty much all gone?

Some of those will be protected by fair use because they could be considered a parody ... others (especially Zelda Classic) not so much

Zelda Classic would be the easiest to fix out of those, since they could just require you load the Z1 or Z3 ROM into it before use. The engine code, quest design and so on is theirs, no question.

There Will Be Brawl is just as long as the film, and is actually earning money (not to break-even but it doesn't matter) so it's the first to go. They're also going to sell a DVD which I will buy as soon as possible because it's probably illegal for them to sell.
