So how does the new 3D work? If it does require double the refresh rate - how do the glasses separate the 2 halves?

The glasses are actually a pair of LCD screens (1 pixel per eye). They alternately light up to block the current frame from one of the eyes, in order to let each eye only see even/odd frames.

The glasses synchronize with the TV via an infrared signal (emitter needed, if not included in TV) in order to know the frame timing.

They're called LCD shutter glasses.

But the $1 glasses I got from the movies are not these. The polarised option is more likely - which explains why it works on normal TVs.

That would make sense for cinemas too - why they need more expensive projectors. And why TVs need to be upgraded.

I was presuming 3D would work with existing sets - if it doesn't, there is no way Ninty would pursue this option. A DS 3D would be more likely...

It will not work on the majority of TVs out there.  That said, you could put in a settings on the console if you want 3D or not, much like you can put in one if you have wide screen or not.  If it costs nothing extra for the console to support 3D, there is no reason why Nintendo would not include it in the next console even if it doesn't work with people who just bought a large  flat screen TV.  Games can be designed to run 3D or not.  You can still play the game as a single view instead of two views on a regular TV.  I have a 360 hooked up to my ED TV, and so it's no different that the connsole can do better than the TV.  The expense is in the TV, not in the console.

Nintendo AND 3D? No way! Nintendo doesn't want immersion in their games, and this new technology certainly will alienate most of Ninty's user base, not to speak about possible sickness effects and whatsoever

I, myself, will be pissed off if they will decide to include this expensive gimmick into their next home console. Actually, I hope Wii will last another 5 or 6 years, and Ninty will continue to pump it up with fun & addictive games.

Maybe my sarcasm detector is broken???

I don't understand why your are acting like it's expensive? or why it would alienate the user base when it's optional? It's expensive for the TV, but the cost of going HD, it's not much more expensive, and you could still play games on regular TVs just fine.

That said, I see no reason for a new consoles for another 5 or 6 years, but when it comes out, it makes sense for it to be supported as it doesn't really change the costs beyond going 1080p or are you suggesting that the next console doesn't support 1080p?

Actually it must just be a broken sarcasm detector as motion controls are more immersive than higher resolution, so Nintendo must want that.

^ It's just not something you'd expect from Nintendo at this point.

Going HD and 3D does require a certain level of technology that Nintendo's userbase is going to have to purchase. Remember that many Wii owners are non-gaming grandpas and grandmas, overweight moms, and ex-gamers. Technology alone is not going to justify the purchase of a new system for them. There's going to have to be something more than that.

I can almost guarantee you that the next Wii console will be in "HD". Nowadays, "HD" isn't that big of deal. Most people are buying "HD" televisions and all "HD" graphics require is a bit more powerful graphics processing. By the time the new Wii comes out, "HD" will be cheaper and thrown on as an afterthought, just like the progressive scanning for 480p they put on the Wii.

Now, I'm not saying that will be the selling point of the new Wii. I'm sure Nintendo will come out with something new and impressive. I'm just saying that making the console "HD" won't be a big deal then.

edit: I should learn to read the OP better before I post :P

I want 3D, but I don't want to use a pair of lunatic glasses in order to play, because:

1) It's weird and you need to have the glasses, otherwise it looks awfull,
2) I already use normal glasses, so don't say to me I have to put other glasses over mine or move to contact lens.

3D should come when you can see it without the need of glasses. I don't know if that is possible, but if it is not, it shall be.

1) Because you need 3D-capable TV while even HD Ready is not so common. Also, those 1$ glasses are crap, for comfortable using you need a ~200$ active shutter glasses. Or something like this, I'm not techcrunch guy who can provide exact details, at least it's what I read somewhere. If I'm wrong about these "shutter" glasses, then correct me.

2) Because if Nintendo position a sistem as 3D and market so, it'll create disinterest among many users who are not that tech savvy. Not to mention that having to wear glasses to play a game is definition of nerdo.

The cinema system uses light polarization... an LCD can't do that, only a projection TV can I think (by the use of a polarization filter in front of the projector).

My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957

Won't happen.

3D requires processing horsepower...something Wii doesnt have and something nintendo doesnt' focus on.

3D sets have been around since 2007 btw.

I lol at those talking about a new Wii, sales prove that Wii needs no upgrades or replacements any time soon, lol
