Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why the next Nintendo console could be - "Wii 3D"

My concern regarding 3D is wearing glasses -- because I wear glasses. So the cardboard cut-outs used with games now don't work well for me. Any home 3D system that used glasses would need them akin to what you find at theme parks for 3D effects -- the large plastic frames that fit over everything.

Nvidia specifically mentions in their features page:

Wear over your prescription glasses
Ensures that users with corrective eyewear can view fully immersive stereoscopic 3D. In addition, adjustable nose pieces ensure a custom fit for each user.

Many of the engineers working on this stuff probably wear glasses themselves... I don't think anyone really needs to worry about this.

My wife has glasses, and happily watched Avatar 3D with them over hers.

I was also impressed how the 3D ads/shows were viewable without the glasses (albiet blurry), and non-3D looked fine with the 3D glasses on.

...

So how does the new 3D work? If it does require double the refresh rate - how do the glasses separate the 2 halves?

And just to be clear - this would not be the next *true* console - its purely a stop-gap extension to the Wii. All companies make massive amounts of money off hardware refreshes - and one of the (odd?) disadvantages about the Wii as it stands - is that there is no need for a "Wii slim" or anything like that.

They could just release a "Wii Deluxe" (say... upscalar, more internal Flash memory, ...) - but that would be a little lame. Just like the DSi with the appstore & camera, it needs something new.

The glasses are actually a pair of LCD screens (1 pixel per eye). They alternately light up to block the current frame from one of the eyes, in order to let each eye only see even/odd frames.

The glasses synchronize with the TV via an infrared signal (emitter needed, if not included in TV) in order to know the frame timing.

They're called LCD shutter glasses.

That is one method.

An alternative to active shutter glasses are polarized glasses that have lenses similar to those on sunglasses. The lenses have polarization that is adjusted to be orthogonal — set perpendicularly at 90-degree angles — to one another.  The images are displayed orthogonal, and because each filter passes only the light that is similarly polarized and blocks the orthogonally polarized light, each eye sees only the image intended for it. The brain then puts these images together to create a three-dimensional effect.

There is also a couple of methods that don't require glasses, but have their own cons...  mainly having a very small sweet spot of where you can properly view the image from...

Wii is still selling like hotcakes. Nintendo has no reason to release a new wii or console until sony or microsoft release a new console. Nintendo's just gonna sit on their Wii goldmine for a few more years and release a new console to compete with the other guys.

Personally Johny's work would be more suitable. Wii already has the tech. It's just reversed. Add IR Lights to the Wiiremote and a IR Sensor on the well Sensor Bar(IR Light bar). Then we can have the best of both worlds.

oh wait isn't Johny doing something like this with MS called Natal?

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Nintendo works on a reversed paradigm. All companies work on both simultaneously, the visual and the gameplay, but one takes center stage in a certain paradigm.

Also, the experience of the player changes from one to the other. While HD and old systems strived for immersion, Nintendo is now trying to do the opposite. If you want to predict what Nintendo will do next you should ask yourself first: Am I having this idea because it's immersive?

If your answer is yes, you probably got it wrong.

Maybe not the technology itself but certainly its implementation and intended use. Nintendo will create products that attach people to their lives and helps them, instead of immersing them in escapism. Of course there will always be aspects of both in certain games, but the latter won't be the focus and probably nearly nothing will be sacrificed on its behalf during the design process of the system. The priority is squarely at engagement, not immersion.

But the $1 glasses I got from the movies are not these. The polarised option is more likely - which explains why it works on normal TVs.

That would make sense for cinemas too - why they need more expensive projectors. And why TVs need to be upgraded.

I was presuming 3D would work with existing sets - if it doesn't, there is no way Ninty would pursue this option. A DS 3D would be more likely...

So if Avatar made you think of the new Nintendo console, are you looking forward to a system that has pretty graphics but isn't good at anything else?

Pfft. Just by a 360 or PS3 then.
