By the description given to the hypothetical game from Matsuno, I just won't care one bit about it.
For me, it's simply not a JRPG. I love JRPG, but I can't stand nearly everything called an Action RPG. To me, these things are action games and no RPG at all. If Action RPG were things like Seiken Densetsu II, then OK, I would like them and call them RPG. But nowadays, Action RPG have nothing that makes RPG interesting.
I started playing FFCC some days ago, and stopped right after my first "forest" stage. I'm not sure I'll ever finish this game, but it has been relegated to the end of my backlog. This thing just isn't a RPG, that's an Action game with some poor elements of RPG. Now I'm sure I won't buy any FFCC anymore, and the game mechanics talked about in the OP just seem like another boring (to me) Action RPG.
I'm sure they call these things Action RPG to try to lure RPG fans to these games. Well, I'm no fool anymore.
Anyway I don't care, as the list of RPG for the Wii is just amazing to me. I bought the Wii solely for Fire Emblem, but there are even more RPG coming.
I'm just in love with my SRPG, as they are the best RPG I ever played, with the very best stories. But it's so hardcore, the SRPG genre is very niche.
Talking about FE and SRPG, it's pretty obvious it's too hardcore for even most reviewers. I remember the first western reviews of the japanese FE10, which were bashing the game for no 16/9 (like it's important) which has been added to the US version BTW (so the european one will surely get it too) and were seeing only a small improvement upon FE9. These guys basically reviewed the game like it was a FPS. At the time, I said to myself that even if it was the same that FE9 technically, but with a continuation of the story, it would be a great game. Now that I have feedback from true SRPG gamers, the game appears to be no short of just awesome: the western reviewers that don't understand a thing about SRPG (or even RPG most of the time) just missed every single feature that made FE10 a great SRPG.
Seems like the PS3 I just bought won't see much game use after all, if it goes on like that. Now I'm sure FE10 will keep me entertained for at least 1 full year. I'd better try to finish FFXII fast now, which is a great game BTW.
