Yeah, It truly was. Its library alone made every other before it look like crap. The PS2 was the king and will always be the King of Gaming. Hell it brought on a new medium as well and helped push the DVD format.

I will agree with the notion that the PS2 is the console of the decade, though. While I haven't played very many games from the PS2, I can't deny it's massive library and broad appeal. It's The Daddy.
