^ yes and no one seems to remember that Sony co-developed the CD

Sony didn't have anything to do with the invention of the CD that was all phillips. What Sony did was at the request of Phillips design a sound chip so that the CD could playback music. I mean it is still important but it is rather insignificant tot eh CD as a Data storage device.

@ gamerace - I know that they are tryin, but I want them to be the system they were last generation now! I miss those days.

That's partly unrealistic expectations and partly Sony being outmanouvered by MS and Nintendo.  Generally all systems suck in their first year.  PS2's wasn't so hot either. And remember Gamecubes? (shutters) Nintendo did and got smart this time.  They pulled all the games off the GC development and put them out for the Wii.  This has had mixed results from Donkey Kong to Zelda, but it has given the Wii a steady stream of games in year 1 the GC lacked and makes PS3 look bad in comparison.   Of course, Sony could never have done that (except maybe for God Of War 2....) with such a successful system as the PS2.  Shorter development time helps too.

Then there's the 360.  It's first year sucked.  At this point it had one AA game (Dead Rising) and one AAA game (Gears) of note.  But that's long ago and people are focused on the now.  A good strategy by MS to come out a year early so it's 2nd year games are compared to Sony's 1st.  In comparison the PS3 has several AA games (HS, Warhawk, Drake's Fortune (maybe)) and one AAA - R&C (too bad it's not your cup of tea).  Really a better start than 360's.  Not to mention lots of good-great multi-platform stuff too.

Again, if you want something now, get a 360 or Wii. But then come holiday '08 don't complain if/when PS3 has the better line-up.

I never knew you were a Sony fan :P

The PS3 should be doing a lot better in 08 than in 07. Why?

-The advantage of Home, the new venture that the PS3 is starting with its Video on Demand, allowing PS3 users to download movies, which means that Sony gets to sell Sony Pictures movies without having to pay somebody else for them like microsoft has to.

-The Blu-ray should be a lot more popular in 08 than it has been this year. Lower prices for players will increase demand according to the price curve. A healthy bluray market will allow sony to produce (better) games less expensively than they are now, because BD isn't that popular yet and the more units of BD made the costs of which will go down.

-As BD gets to be more popular the value/price mental equation that consumers bring with them to help them decide whether or not a particular item is worth purchasing or not, the value or numerator portion of this heuristic will increase, meaning that the PS3 will become a lot more popular.

-The 40g model of the PS3 is going to be a big help in the 2nd and 3rd world countries, heck its going to help Sony a lot in America as far as sales go because there are plenty of consumers out there that don't care about BC and just want a cheap console.

So, give the PS3 some time and I think that it will meet your expectations for a console within a matter of months.

Thanks to kenobi after I got him to ban my old account (dallas) after someone hacked into it and being ok with me coming back under a slightly different username.  I appreciate our communication in the PMs.  Also I want to give a big thank you to vgchartz for being one of the cooler websites around.

Oh, and I'm still the next Michael Pachter

I think there is a combination of Sony making some very bad mistakes, and (mainly) Nintendo having (correctly) analyzed Sony's success and Nintendo's mistakes and created a very strong strategy to deal with them.

The Playstation and PS2 were launched 18 months before the N64 and Gamecube whereas the PSP and PS3 were launched (pretty-much) alongside the Nintendo DS and Wii.

The Playstation and PS2 were launched at historically acceptable prices for the platforms whereas the PSP was expensive for a handheld and the PS3 was expensive for a console.

It took the Gamecube years before it had released Zelda, Metroid, Mario, Smash Bros., Paper Mario and Mario Kart whereas the Wii will have released all these in a little more than a year.

The (overall) result is that Nintendo has turned the tables on Sony and people who expected the PS3 to follow in the PS2's footsteps are (probably) upset.
