I am curious, who are they?

Those who pick on the Wii and its games everytime they see a chance to do it. I won't name names, because even kingofwale deserves some respect.

but both games are wii games.

There are Wii games and then there are Wii games.

and then there's mario games

i knew it would, and my sole reasoning was based on how well NSMB DS sold

Monster Hunter Tri

Name: Silver

ID: 94BRVX

Yes but I didn't think in so few weeks...it outsold SMG in Japan in less than 10 days!

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

With ease.

Some people are still refusing to believe that NSMB will sell more than 11M in 12 months.

Okay, I'll elaborate.

There are Wii games that are in line with what a certain group of gamers want: better graphics and sound, more story, more epicness. These games usually get much less hated on. There will always be detractors to just about any game, but with these games it's in the norm. Super Mario Galaxy fits this category.

Then there are the Wii games that (seem to) go completely against the things listed above. They cause extreme reactions and sometimes it even seems that some people feel personally offended that these games are even being made. In NSMB Wii's case, there were people who said that it should be on the DS, because that's where 2D games belong.

I agree with you there but NSMB doesnt fit at all, wiifit, wii sports, Wiiplay, those games get the hatred you speak of, most argument about it has been how good it is, while some see it as a great games ( goty) while some see it as just good.

I guess most people know how foolish they would look, if they would attack NSMB Wii in the same way the Wii series was talked about. Therefore the criticism is similar to what happened last year with Mega Man 9. You can't really play down the core of the game, but everything else that it doesn't is.

Every games have critics, none are exempt from it, even the great ones. NSMB is not perfect, it loaded with flaws just like every game, but it's a little difficult for no reasons when i tried it, but fun nonetheless. It's not the best game released this year, but it's one of the best.

I'm looking at the possibility of hitting 30m...

Care to make a prediction for how this game's sales will stack up against Mario Kart Wii's after 18 months?

I figured NSMBW would appeal to much the same audience as Mario Kart, and quite likely beyond as many 'lapsed' gamers, especially women, have fond memories of playing Mario 2D games but haven't played or grown to love the 3D version.
The mulitplayer is genius because it means you can suck and still enjoy the game and progress as long as you have a capable friend/child/spouse to play with (or use the walkthrough mode if you don't)

SMG has basically sold to the Nintendo faithful and a little beyond. SMG2 will sell to only the Nintendo faithful and probably only manage 6m especially if it's harder to play.

It depends a bit on when you ask me. Before Super Mario Galaxy launched, I expected it to sell ~ 12-13 million (which was also what I thought Mario Kart Wii would sell). At that time, I didn't even consider thinking about a New Super Mario Bros game on Wii, so I had no opinion of that.
After SMG sold quite a bit less than I expected, I thought that Mario platformers were seeing a decline, as the genre itself had been doing for over 10 years. I remember agreeing with someone that a 2D Mario Platformer would sell around 10 million. In other words, roughly the same as Super Mario Galaxy.
I later looked at the numbers a bit more carefully, and for the past half year (at least) I've been certain that NSMB Wii would sell more. I always saw it as a possibility than NSMB Wii would sell a mere 5-7 million, as I saw 2D platformers on recent consoles as something unproven.  Essentially: Before SMG launched, I probably would have thought they would sell equally well, or perhaps I would have given NSMB Wii a slight edge. After SMG semi-flopped in my eyes, I thought that NSMB Wii would most likely sell ~ 10 million, or slightly more than SMG. Then, I looked a bit more at the numbers and saw just how large an edge NSMB Wii would get. However, I still had some doubts that it would sell a lot.

He rarely elaborates on his views on the forums (and I won't bother questioning why), but seeing as he looks at "the possibility of it hitting 30 million" he probably believes it to sell around the same as Mario Kart Wii. That game is, after all, looking at (most likely) just shy of that.

Personally, I'd say the question you should ask yourself is: How much will New Super Mario Bros. Wii sell in 2010? If you expect it to sell more in 2010 than Mario Kart Wii did in 2009, New Super Mario Bros. should be at least slightly ahead after 18 months (aligned launches)

(I wrote this just after you posted it. However,my internet connection is currently down, so it will be posted whenever it returns)

I didn't feel certain it would initially. But then I took a look at New Super Mario Bros. sales. With 20+ million it's absolutely huge. I couldn't really see a reason why a 2D Mario wouldn't sell just as well on a console as a handheld. It then looked like a certain 10 million seller, and for some reason Wii games rarely end up in the 10-20 million range. If they go beyond 10 million, they go beyond 20 million. So truly, beating Super Mario Galaxy felt pretty much a given after thinking about it.
