From one perspective I guess smaller sets have better quality than larger (ceterus parabus). Its that the lighting quality from the backlight is better on a smaller set than a larger set and its the quality of the backlight which can dictate the quality of the colour reproduction. You also can have less light bleeding around the edge of the set.

Generally though, smaller set and resolution means less detail in the image.  Nothing that I suspect would trouble current games on PS3/360 too much, but noticable with a BR film like Blade Runner or 1080p HD content.

Pretty much, but I was thinking comparing the same resolution reproduction, ceterus parabus means all else remains equal.

I doubt TV will be broadcast above 720p/1080i for a long time so the true benefit of a 1080p panel is dependant on the TV having a good internal scaler. This is why often the quality gap between a 1080p and 720p TV isn't obvious to most people, they're just not using native 1080p sources often enough. I think its a moot point anyway as inside the next few years all TV's no matter their panel size will end up being 1080p just to reduce costs of panel production.

I know that!  But I've clearly been talking about native resolution content the whole time!

Studying languages are we?

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Well when they are pretty much the same price, I'd go with 1080P, why drop over a grand if you're not going to get the best. And I have enough Bluray movies and games that play above 720 to make the higher bracket worth it.

yep, latin is a pretty cool language. Im just looking at some phrases/word meanings rather than actually learning to speak it.

Native resolution is not the whole picture, so to speak. As a good friend once said, pixels are over-rated and the quality of reproduction may be better on a smaller set than a larger set, resolution differences included because a 1080P source with flaws such as specular aliasing etc can look better reduced to 720P than at its native source resolution. This is particularly evident in games, however with Movies because the source is of such high quality you don't have the gains from the 'supersampling effect' when downscaling so therefore a higher output resolution is preferable.

Btw is 'Reasonable' your tag everywhere or did you make it especially for here?

1080p on my 22 inch tv is amazing. It owns my friends 19 inch 720p.

Just for here.  I don't really post anywhere else much, but found myself strangely drawn to this site - Korma, as my wife likes to say (I don't know why either before you ask, she thinks it's hilarious).

I of course agree with your comments.  Myself, looking at it simplified, take the following view and then decide on budget realities:

1 - will I be regularly watching Blue Ray movies and other 1080p native content?  If so, 1080p is preferred

2 - will I mainly be playing HD games on PS3/360?  If so, 720p is fine currently.

3 - am I skint?  If so then I will have to hook up my HD console to an SD TV

As others have pointed out, it looks like apart from small TVs 720p will become extinct and it will be 1080p as standard anyway.

BTW, just got the new Star Trek on Blue Ray, plus Season One and Two OS - and they look lovely!

Sounds pretty reasonable to me. Btw Indian Korma is a pretty good coconut dish, you should try it.

So... after all this nerd talk.. there is one question left: What does 1080p do for porn?
