I doubt TV will be broadcast above 720p/1080i for a long time so the true benefit of a 1080p panel is dependant on the TV having a good internal scaler. This is why often the quality gap between a 1080p and 720p TV isn't obvious to most people, they're just not using native 1080p sources often enough. I think its a moot point anyway as inside the next few years all TV's no matter their panel size will end up being 1080p just to reduce costs of panel production.
