I of course agree with your comments.  Myself, looking at it simplified, take the following view and then decide on budget realities:

1 - will I be regularly watching Blue Ray movies and other 1080p native content?  If so, 1080p is preferred

2 - will I mainly be playing HD games on PS3/360?  If so, 720p is fine currently.

3 - am I skint?  If so then I will have to hook up my HD console to an SD TV

 

As others have pointed out, it looks like apart from small TVs 720p will become extinct and it will be 1080p as standard anyway.

BTW, just got the new Star Trek on Blue Ray, plus Season One and Two OS - and they look lovely!

 

Sounds pretty reasonable to me. Btw Indian Korma is a pretty good coconut dish, you should try it.
