Forums - Gaming Discussion - What happened to the most underrated developer of the 2000s?

Whats happening with Monolith Productions? Their site has been shut down for months now (http://www.lith.com/), there are no new game announcments...nothing.

These guys were one of the best game developers of the late 90s and early to mid 2000s, but if you are a console gamer, its understandable that you never played many of their games.

If you don't know much about them...first game they made was Blood - 82 on metacritic. http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/blood

Afterwords they had a string of acclaimed titles such as

Shogo - 88 on meta (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/shogomobilearmordivision)

No one lives forever - 91 on meta (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/noonelivesforever)

Alien VS Predator 2 - 85 on meta (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/aliensvspredator2)

No one lives forever 2 - 91 on meta (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/noonelivesforever2)

Tron 2.0 - 84 on meta (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/tron20)

We will kindly ignore Matrix online and pretend it never happened :)

Finally when they hit HD consoles in 2005 they had great games like Condemned, FEAR and Condmened 2 before releasing midly dissapointing FEAR 2 last year.

So I am wondering whats going on with Monolith these days? Is this studio on the rocks? It would be such a shame if they decide to fold...

shogo was a great game (awesome story and characters), im not even a shooter or manga (mech fan) but this game blew me away at the time, and i enjoyed it more then half life.

I would love an HD remake.

I thought the most underrated developer of the 2000s was Sonic Team?

Odd that Monolith apparently went down, though. 2005 was their huge year with putting out both the top-rated FEAR and Condemned, but the sequels to both didn't quite seem to stand up.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

lol, someone said sonic team was underrated.

I would actually give the award to The Creative Assembly.
All of the total war games have been awesome (even the total warrior series)
The only blotch on their record is that stormrise game which I don't even think used the main guys anyway.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

I think the Sonic thing was a joke...like, it has to be...lol

Creative assemply is awesome but they have not been able to expand outside the RTS realm. I believed in Viking when I heard Creative Assemply is making it who made Spartan Total war for xbox before which was awesome...but couldn't finish it. I hear stormrise was dreadful.

Id give the battle between the two studios to Monolith as they have been able to jump all over the place with types of games they are making.

OT - There are rumors that FEAR 3 is in the making. I really hope its something that they want to do and have their hearts in to. Hate to say it but FEAR 2 felt like a cash in on the awesome FEAR 1...

I really miss the golden years of PC gaming.

I really don't think they have folded. Their mother company is huge, and looks to be expanding farther into game development with the recent purchase of Midway. If anything I bet they are getting bigger.

I hope you are right... Hopefully they aren't pressured to make hit sequels by their parent company.

I didn't care much for the other games but No One Lives Forever was epic and the sequel even more so. Certainly in my top 5 best shooters of all time.

No. Not to derail the thread, but, especially in the early part of the decade, Sonic team put out some of the best games of the past 10 years: Phantasy Star Online (especially the GC and Xbox version, episodes I & II), and Sonic Adventure 2, the superlative 3D platformer of all time, and second-best game of all time, after only Metroid Prime.
