It has purely to do with development costs and production values. That's why Brutal Legend and inFamous are considered AAA games even through their review averages are in the early and mid 80s respectively.



AAA is not actually a regualted standard term. Therefore it has no official meaning.

Its a bit like True HD or FULL HD

We sort of know it means 1080p (which is a recognised standard) but the terms themselves were made up by marketing men trying to sell televisions and have no real meaning.
