Forums - Sales - User base is not a factor for big franchises.

GT is bigger than FF... the average title sale for GT is significantly more than FF.... So marketable and liked is the GT brand that it managed to sell the 'demo' priced at abt same as a full priced game more than it's nearest Racing rival(Forza 3 - Unlikely to reach the 4mil+ GT5p sales). I fully expect GT5 to sell over 10million copies world wide.

However, FFXIII will outsell GT5 for the simple reason that it will come out on the X360 aswell.

As for the argument that user base doesn't matter, it's false. It does matter. I'm fairly certain that if the PS3 had about 8mil User Base in Japan, sales of Final fantasy XIII could be 10-20% greater than it is now.

I am a Gamer... I play games and not consoles. I have a PC and Console on which I game... I like games. End of Story!

I think install base affects mostly games with wide appeal, games like MKWii, NSMBWii, CoD, Pro Evolution, Guitar Hero, Madden, etc. Thus, most of these games increase their sales as the userbase expands.

I'm pretty sure if Konami released MGS5 tommorrow, it would sell exactly the same as MGS4, there would be no penetration. That's why we see games like SSBM, FFXIII, etc reach dizzy attach rates.

correct. you've corrected me. i should rename the OP from "big franchises" to "big franchises with an existing fanbase".

and yes, for franchises with an already established fanbase, user base on the console is not going to matter. it's going to sell roughly the same with every single iteration, providing the same quality.

and this is why gran turismo 5 is going to sell 10 million. all GT's before that have sold 10 million. the fanbase will all buy it, and so you will get your 10 million, even though the PS3 user base isn't as high as the PS2.

I would say FFXIII having a ~17% smaller first week than Final Fantasy XII would suggest that userbase is a factor, just not as big of a factor as some people think.

It really depends on the game.  Something with a more dedicated fanbase (FF, MGS, SSB) tends to get less of a lift or decline, but it hugely impact franchises which cater to a large mainstream audience (Mario, GT, GTA, etc).

The userbase don't matter in Japan, as far as FFXIII is concerned. It's the same with Halo in the US.

Currently playing on PS3: God of War III

Currently playing on Xbox360: Final Fantasy XIII

Currently playing on NDS: Chrono Trigger

I'd put other factors above userbase for this decline :

- Japan market in much worse condition that when FFXII launched

- Consoles are in decline

- Final Fantasy is in decline

- NSMBWii and Wii itself

- Worldwide economic crisis

- Soriku's all-consuming-rage-beam that destroyed half Tokyo due to Tales of Graces underperforming
