I read a lot of comments on this thread and I can see how a lot of people are haters and fans of FF. So to both haters and fan here is the truth:
1) FF XIII first week is less than the previous FF games (starting from VII)
2) Records has shown that FF games don't have great legs, but with around 900,000 preorders the game managed to have a 600,000 copies increase and that is the best a FF game has done, so probably it will show legs.
3)The best selling game on the PS3 in Japan 5 days ago was MGS 4 with 720,000 copies. FF XIII in just 3 days double that amount (JUST 3 DAYS, more than double).
4) This week was the biggest week ever for the PS3 HW in Japan
5) Even Famitsu predictions arse was kicked in only 3 days
6) Not going to talk about the user base factor because I think that most people in Japan buys a PS3 because of FF and FF XIII is also my reason for buying a PS3

No matter what you say, whatever comparison you would like to make, the game is a SUCCESS, a big SUCCESS

I agree with all this pretty much, but 3 clarifications...

1) We don't know exact preorder figures, for FFXIII or any of the previous series for comparison.

2) It was actually 4 days of sales (Thursday through Sunday).

3) Famitsu predictions are for shipments, and those were totally shattered on day one (1.8m).

...I do expect better 2n3/3rd week legs for FFXIII due to the holidays though.  At least versus FFX/XII.

FF X preorder: 1.4 Millions , source: http://ps2.ign.com/articles/096/096716p1.html   and first week: 1.9 M (35% increase)

FF XII preorder:   I remember reading around 1.4 Millions   but I am having a bit trouble finding the source: and first week: 1.8 M (28% increase)

FF XIII preorder: 900,000  and first week: 1.5 Milllions (66 % increase)

Fatmistu predictions were also for LTD sales and they estimated: 1.5M LTD and that has already been passed

What's so insane about 30 million? It will take a long time, but the Wii will be selling for long enough, enough new wii owners will pick it up to eventually reach that mark.

Does thirty million seem too high for MKWii? That's at 19.3 million after less than two years! I see Mario 5 outdoing MKWii.

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

NSMB Wii will easily pass 15m - will be at nearly 9m by the end of 2009. I'm going well over 20m lifetime.

I'd suspect it to get closer to 30mill, if not passing that too.

lol CGI, thats a joke right? NSMBwii will sell a LOT but 30 mil is pushing it, geez.

It could be, but considering the reception to Mario, I wouldn't call it impossible.

Considering this is Nintendo's best selling console, and the fastest selling in history, no I don't think it's pushing it.

Ok man, I personally dont see it happening except NSMBW is bundled with every wii in the future akin to wii sports but maybe I'm the one who's naive lol. We'll see.

Well, the bundles seem likely, which is mainly how I see that # happening. It'll reach 20mill indefinitely without them though, IMO.

I dont think it can even 20 mil without bundles but if it becomes the new wii sports, the possibilities are endless so fair enough.

I dont see it happening without bundling in favor of mario 5. MKwii is more "pick up n play" while mario is for the old schoolers and collectors. I dont think the new mario has as much of a potential to appeal to the "blue ocean" as MKwii does.

Mario is extremely "pick up and play". It's also the original game that turned non-gamers into gamers, hence SMB sold 40 million on the NES!

@ioi No one I think but according to the Japan preview it was at 800k the Sunday before launch. Did it go up that much in 3 days?

That was the nes days. If you wanted to play games at all, you played mario. I played mario on nes and snes as well but I dont play it anymore simply because I prefer other game types now. There are lots of options now and a big portion of mario sales is still nostalgia. newcomers would have a lot more choices this time around and I just dont see mario 5 being the "first choice" like it was before...not even on wii itself.

The NES days were much smaller than the Wii days. I don't expect NSMB to have the same sort of attach ratio as SMB (over 60%). It doesn't need it to reach 30 million though. If the Wii carries on towards 120mill, it only needs a 25% attach ratio which is lower than MKWii and Wii Fit's current attach ratio. And personally, I think 120 mill is lowballing it for the Wii.

The game and especially the PS3 did insanely good #s, I can't wait to see the final tally for the week!!!

FOREVER IN DARKNESS!!!

Why is SkyNet wearing a PS3 Logo???

30 million is possible for NSMB Wii, though it may be pushing it.

Breaking it down into regions, I'd say Japan does 5mil, Americas does 13mil, Others 8mil. I think 2D Mario is bigger in the Americas than Mario Kart, though probably not in Others.

Well, it should become clearer in a year or so.
