Final Fantasy XII released exclusively on the PlayStation 2 with an install base of approximately 20 million PS2 owners in Japan. The game sold approximately 2.4 million in Japan to date.

Analyst Yusuke Tsunoda, of Tokai Tokyo Securities Co, expects Final Fantasy XIII to outsell Final Fantasy XII, despite the PS3 only having an install base of approximately 4 million units.

The 13th iteration “is a really strong title and sales look a lot better than we expected,” said Tsunoda. "Domestic sales may exceed the results of the previous Final Fantasy title and help bolster demand for the PS3," said Tsunoda.

In September Enterbrain President, Hirokazu Hamamura, expected PS3 demand to rise by 500,000 units. We will however have to wait and see how much of an effect Final Fantasy XIII has on PS3 sales until later this week when official Media Create sales are released.

I've been pretty confident it will outsell 12 but it's nice to be backed up by someone in the industry.

Final Fantasy XII did 1,441,000 day one according to Sinobi, while Square-Enix is claiming Final Fantasy XIII did ~1,000,000 day one. It will beat FFXII worldwide, but most PS3 games end up lower than their PS2 counterparts in Japan by 25-35%.

Like the Source said, Final Fantasy XIII doesn't have much of a chance at beating FFXII in Japan. It definitely has a shot at making up the difference worldwide, though. If FFXIII were actually to sell over 2.4 lifetime in Japan, that would just be massive.

Do you have any data other than the SE comment? The ~1 mill doesn't include bundles. Do you have any shipment figures for the bundles? I'd really like to know if that 200k rumor is real or not.

This is the most confusing launch ever, maybe I have been reading too GAF. I really don't how well this game is going to sell. I keep hearing 1.8 million shipped might be a little too much because of used sale games in JAPAN, then it seems SE has shipped even more copies. The Bundles are even crazier, first it was 40k, then it became 200k, but who really knows how much SE really put out there.
And for the first time, there was no 1st day sale, which really annoyed me.

Don't we usually have actual first days sales by now? This is really annoying.

Well...we got some reports that a hand full of Japanese retailers broke the street date. My guess is that is why we don't have any Famitsu first day sales. It probably spread out the impact.
