Well, I don't think it's a true RPG. Most JRPG's aren't true RPG's imo. When I think of RPG, I think of Role-Playing, and I don't find much Role-Playing in JRPG's really. You pick up an already written character. When I play as Lightning, her change in personality throughout the game, her relationships, everything has already been decided.

Or, maybe it is an RPG because you get a role and "play" with it, but that would mean most games are RPG's.

I agree with everything here - virtually verbatim.  People can say what they want about Dragon Age, but it is much more the RPG than 90% of the "RPGs" in recent memory.  That said, I am really looking forward to Versus, though it isn't a true RPG either.

I classify it as a Third Person Shooter. A VERY slow paced one though!

Square Enix sux ! How dare they ! I was deceived into buying it because I thought it was a racer !

I'd say it's an RPG.

Though i'd say the term RPG may be outdated... since the core of RPG is being canabalized by the other genres.

How different is an Action RPG from an Action game where you level up your stuff? Not much right? except you'd expect the Action rpg to control worse, but have more options.


How is a Strategy RPG different from a regular Strategy game, like Advance wars, where you level up units and have special abilties. Once again, not much... except the main characters are the controllers and not the participants? But there SRPGs are games where this isn't so as well.

The line between SRPG and RPG has blurred considerably as other genres looked over and saw how leveling up can improve a game and also make a game more complicated as you go on, making the learning curve less steep.

Also, RPGs saw things from other genres they liked... so we got things like action RPGs....


Really the only RPGs that aren't blurred are JRPGs that kept the turn based system. Not too many games that handle battles like that with no leveling up.
