Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why Phantasy Star Zero did not sell as well as Phantasy Star Portable?

Sega decide to go for the local multiplayer option, which is big in Japan, for PSP while opting to use the online mutiplayer option on the DS. Online gaming in Japan is not very popular. This is why PSP sold better than PSO.

Very good point on the local multiplayer being more popular in Japan. From what I heard, this is a major reason why PSP Monster Hunter games have done better than Tri.

Considering PS0 has online and offline multiplayer, I have no idea what your point is.

PSP rode the MHP2 wave of success, PS0 didn't. Maybe Sega should've ported PS0 to Wii to follow up MH3?

Game came out first week of March. Didn't the gamer's day sales start in late April?

But wait! Phantasy Star Zero also has local multiplayer! No one is forced to play online. PS0 has offline and online multiplayer too.

You haven't played PSP have you so you really have no idea what point I just made or why your statement is mostly wrong.

One thing is, while neither had ads or promotion, the PSP game was put on sale the second week it was released in Gamestops gamer days sale, so the games were put into a bin front and center of every store vs the DS game that was likely buried/mixed in with every other DS game.

The US sales are pathetic when compared to the Japanese sales. PSP sold over 600k in Japan alone, while it still barely broke the 150k in the US and EU. Zero is doing better in the west it would seem, but it did terrible in Japan compared to PSP.

The thing is that PsP is pretty much a futuristick MHP. And thats why Japanese gamers love them. These games sell well on the PSP, but they struggle to find an audience on the DS...

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

Phantasy Star Portable = PSP = Playstation Portable
PS0 =/= DS

maybe because of "zero" in the title...as RE Zero...

I do not recall,PS0, PSZero having a local Mutiplayer. It just has an online Mutiplayer and a story mode with AI partners. Maybe there is a way to play the game with friends offline?

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba
