Forums - Sales - New Super Mario Bros Wii only 85K behind Moder Warfare 2 (PS3)

So what? Ps3 has what, half amount of people as wii has. I think it's amazing how modern warfare 2 got so many copies sold on ps3 in that much time.

Modern Warfare 2 (X360) Americas: 4.87m

New Super Mario Bros. Wii Americas: 2.40m

New Super Mario Bros. Wii needs to outsell Modern Warfare 2 with 350k per week in order to have sold more by January NPD numbers.

Last week it outsold MW2 with 160k.

It is likely that NSMB.Wii will sell better after the holidays than MW2. It's going to be close, but I still think MW2 will win, and I have done since I saw the first week figures. Those were way higher than I had anticipated...

After the hilidays NSMBW can sell well but every week over 350k seems way much, and this is counting MW2 sales at 0.

This bet will never have a clear winner, we don't know if Reggie wanted to bet against the PS3 version or the 360 one...Even if Reggie looses what does it loose? Nothing I think. He's the smartest guy from Nintendo, he can loose bets without really have to pay!

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

Eh? Who cares if some mario game sells more than some cod game?

Read the thread, not just the title.

edit: or the lovely summary below.

Mario brothers has been around in some form or fashion since 1980, call of duty since what 2003. What a fair comparison.

It, to me at least, just underscores how well 3rd party titles are doing on the PS/360 compared to their wii counterparts, most 3rd party developers would die to have the numbers that COD is running emulated on the wii.

Nice spin. Apparently Nintendo's ability to keep Mario relevant for so long makes its sales to any IP an "unfair comparison." Let me ask you this, do you think Call of Duty will be more popular in 15 years, than Mario is now?

I have a more direct comparison in mind - what was Modern Warfare 2's budget compared to NSMB Wii?

That's not a fair question. You know that Nintendo was very lazy with NSMB Wii. I heard that a team of twelve people made the game in nine months.

I'm sorry, but I require a source. That would mean the game, which was playable (including the later stages) at the time, had only been in development for a few months prior to its announcement. Excuse me if I don't believe this for a second.

And how was Nintendo "lazy" with NSMB Wii?

You just got played.

To prevent this from happening in the future, whenever you see a thread or post by Rol, just remember one simple phrase: you can't spell troll without rol.

Anyway...a summation of the events leading up to this thread:

Reggie: "New Super Mario Bros. Wii will deliver."

Geoff: "U THINK IT OUTSELL MODENR WARFARE 2?? MAKE A BET!"

Reggie: "It should outsell at least one version by January's NPD results."

Geoff: "THREEEEE SIXTYYYYYY!!!"

Internet: "OMG REGGIE u R SO STUPID AND OBNOXNIOUS TO CREATE THIS BET MODERN WARFAER IS GOIGN TO PWN MARIOOO!!"

Modern Warfare 2 does not pwn Mario after all.

Thread: "Reggie is about to win the bet."

Sony crowd: "LOL this is so unfair mario is huge u should stop putting it up against little ole modern warfare if u r comparing them ps3 mw2 must be huuuge and spectacular to come close but it doesnt matte because legendary mario shouldn't be compared to mw2 is too big kay"

I like writing stuff like this

Claude. Perfect summation. Still brings a smile to my face two days later.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

I certainly think New Super Mario Bros. Wii can sell over 350k on average in the Americas these coming 7 weeks. The two last weeks will probably see lower numbers than that, but the couple of weeks coming up should more than compensate for that. I have no idea how much Modern Warfare 2 will sell though. I'm inclined to believe sales will drop hard after christmas, but I'm not going to make any predictions because I so hate being wrong.

I don't think MW2 on the 360 doesn't have a great chance for overall victory over NSMBW. The install base for the Wii is almost double that of the 360 worldwide. MW2 has a chance in NA. Too many people will buy the game because it is a good Mario game and it is "kid" friendly. Just look at the first Mario and Sonic at the Olympics. The game is less than stellar, but it sold like hot cakes because stupid non gaming parents buy the game for their kids because it has two popular video characters on it. The Wii's install base is too large and since NSMBW is actually a good game, it will outsell MW2 overall on the 360.

It would be sad if Mario didnt. Mario franchise is so much bigger then the COD franchise. Plus its the only AAA game for Wii this year. (did they have a AAA game in 08? if not then its the first AAA game for Wii in 2 years)

Brawl was at least liked by the critict. Mario Kart is one, even though they didn't want it to be.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

I'd like to add Wii Fit to that list, even though most people wouldn't agree with me.
