Forums - Gaming Discussion - What is the production Cost of Final Fantasy XIII?

A lot, but it will make them back, because I think it can sell 10m across all the consoles, this game has been a long time coming, though interestingly, in Europe, we have been waiting for GoW III as long as Final Fantasy XIII

FF XII was one of the most expensive games of last gen, so this one will be even more expensive, especially as they created a new engine for it, which they will be re-using for Versus I think

lol dont bet on that...FFXIII will NOT sell 10mil across all consoles..it probably wont pass 2mil on 360..and on PS3 it will do average FF numbers in line with previous installments( like 5-6mil )

The wait builds anticipation, I think 7m on PS3 and 3m on 360.

Notice how sales tend to decrease through the gen

PosGameConsoleSalesRelease Date
1 Final Fantasy VII 9.72m 03rd Sep 97
2 Final Fantasy VIII 7.86m 07th Sep 99
3 Final Fantasy IX 5.30m 13th Nov 00
PosGameConsoleSalesRelease Date
1 Final Fantasy X 7.95m 17th Dec 01
2 Final Fantasy XII 5.68m 31st Oct 06
3 Final Fantasy X-2 5.21m 18th Nov 03

So ignoring the spin off, X-2, sales have decreased through the generation. So expect higher sales than XII on PS3 alone. The game is going to sell great as they are doing a great job of hyping the game, and I am sure they are going to market the hell out of it. Oh, and the game is going to be fantastic

well should of adressed this better....FF still sells loong after thay are taken off shelf, i was more talkin about the where the sells will be once they leave shelf space.like FF7 wasnt at 9mill when it stoped being printed. I expect to hit 10mil eventually like the rest, but during its print run...hope that made sense

Well, Final Fantasy 12 cost $40 million with a crazy long development time. I imagine that it's somewhere between $40-60 million.

well companring this to Final Fantasy 12 won't be right as it wasn't HD and FF13 has been in develpment since FF10

No it has not been in development for 8 years. That's a huge load of BS.

And what makes HD games cost more than last generation? They require more time to make and larger teams to work with. The main cost there is salaries. I highly doubt the size of the team changed all the much and the development times aren't too different.

While I think it's definitely more expensive, it's a possibility that they're not far apart.

it was first in development to be on the PS2.U shud really do some searching.

When the production time exceeded and new cosoles were released, they then announced it as a PS3 game

That's BS. You had the head people on the development team say that actual development took 3 years, but it took 5 years including the work before PS3 dev kits existed.

Seriously. Watch the launch video. It did not take 8 years in development.

i didn't say FF13 PS3 took 8 years. They first had it in development for the PS2 but then they scrapped it and started building on it the PS3 version.

Easily more than 100 million, and it has not made that yet and I doubt it will.

The game has been in production for about five years and it's a pretty big budget game. Stack ontop of that the advertising and breaking 100 million isn't something too hard to imagine.

probably 60mil

yeah i think the around that only. But it could be alot more as it has been in development since Final Fantasy XIII

and marketing... plus you consider how long it is.  Could be anywhere between 50-100+

I coudn't disagree more.

I mean, how else do you think they made all those new graphical assets.

Either expanding the team or having it work longer.

Keep in mind they brought other teams off their projects to work on FF13.

The average cost of games this gen has about doubled because creating HD games costs so much more.  It requires more time, more people, more complex systems, and, well, just bigger everything.

You're right that it wasn't in actual development for 8 years but it was in development for at least five which is INSANE.

Hell, with any 5+ year project think how much money you waste in turnovers and rehiring alone.
