LOL I doubt theres a JRPG than can take out Mass Effect 2 next year. It's just a dominant RPG as is.

Final Fantasy XIII may have something to say about that young man!

Final Fantasy will be the best JRPG and will sell well but as far as quality and truer RPG elements are concerned Mass Effect 2 all the way.:)

Of course we know the issue of quality will be subjective. According to many, it's also a field where it's rarely lacked....

Quality can be subjective, yes, as in 'eye of the beholder' beauty. Theres also objective quality which is based upon value in its genre and what it offers above and beyond. It's no contest really in an objective sense. Thats where I am getting at. Final Fantasy is a big story which you just play out with the old RPG turn based system. Mass Effect 2 is much more than just that.

I guess that's a subject we'll always disagree on, Final Fantasy is much more than that descritption in my opinion.

Final Fantasy is just a story with a battle system. Prove me wrong. I would love to see it your rebuttal.

Well, this isn't a contest of right and wrong S.T.A.G.E. I have an opinion, as do you. They differ, so what?

I respect your opinion, usually you explain it even though we agree to disagree at times. This is one of the few times you never explained though.

It's quite simple really, Final Fantasy (at least to me) has never been just a turn-based, story driven experience and that's all. Final Fantasy played different from other games during it's times of infancy, in the same genre, and being the top franchise (PS1 gen). It also is one of the indunstry's largest franchises, that's hard to do. Looking at it now, Mass Effect isn't comparable to Final Fantasy in many respects, in fact they're completely different. You think Mass Effect has a quality that Final fantasy is missing. I disagree...

Final Fantasy, outside from being one of the most desired games/franchises in the bizz, really evolves with each new installment. That's quite a feat for a franchsie that's 20+ years old. All I'm saying is, be happy for Mass Effect, I know I am, it's a great franchise. But don't knock Final Fantasy just because you don't favor it and then attack anyone who opposes. I said my opinion differs from yours, and clearly now you should see why. I see nothing wrong with opposes to my opinion as well, but just know that i can't prove you wrong on your assessment, as you can't prove me wrong on mine. There's no right or wrong outlook here, just how you approach a given situation.

I blame myself for this one though, I sarcastically brought up Final Fantasy and people took it too serious, and in essence, derailed my own thread. Ah well.....

translation: final fantasy is a great franchise that has evolved over the years.

........

So?

It doesn't change the fact that it is still a story driven turn based game. And that's not an opinion, it's not debatable. IT'S FACT.

if they are talking ff13.

they dont have budget, quality or sales to not worry O_o

I am very sure that Mass Effect 2 had a higher budget than FFXIII. No one hires Martin Sheen for voice acting without paying 1 million or more. LOLz

ff12 had 40 million budget =) and it was a ps2 game.

Thats great. Most games today funded by huge publishers for the HD systems have huge budgets as well much larger than that.

same for ff13 =). it should have at least double ff12 budget.

I think what STAGE is saying is that traditionally an RPG is by definition something that allows you to play as someone else they way you think that character should be played since you are the one role playing. Mass Effect allows you to mold your character almost anyway you would like. Final Fantasy on the other hand gives you a preset story and characters and no matter what you do you can't change how the characters will react to a situation, even if its not the way you would act, which can ruin the immersion.

Some people argue that by having such open decisions you can't make a very strong story but I think games like Kotor and Mass Effect have dispelled than notion. I can't tell you how many times I've played a jrpg and had the main character do something that I would never in a million years contemplate and I'm left on the sideline frustrated and unable to interact.

IMO, the only RPG part of FF is that you sometimes get to choose your name and abilities. But games that aren't even RPG let you do that. COD: MW2 does that. Does that make a call of duty game an RPG? ... no.

@ Stage...

I'm not sure how FF13 is a truer RPG...in what respects?

I never said FFXIII was a truer RPG. Mass Effect is more of an RPG than FFXIII will ever be. I've already seen the first five minutes of FFXIII gameplay and its not really so different from the last. Minor changes really as always but thankfully a new story to look at.

LOL..oops to my poor reading comprehension.

Good post.

I just see it as two different ways to play a role-playing game.

I understand.

What would be really epic would be a traditional jrpg that has a branching story like Mass Effect or Kotor and lets you make your own decisions. Do you know if a game like that has ever been done? To the best of my knowledge there hasn't been any.

The responses keep getting more and more subjective. Just because you call something an rpg doesn't actually make it so.
