Forums - Gaming - Why this obsession with exclusives on platforms people own?

Im not talking about exclusives that you don't have access to, im talking about exclusives that people do have access to on one of their platforms. It makes sense to complain or to feel disapointed when a game is exclusive and not obtainable. I don't understand why people obsess over them when they are easily obtainable on the platforms they own.

On my Playstation 3 I am delighted to have access to a wide range of games. Why would I distinguish between a game like Little Big Planet and a game like Call of Duty when both games are equally obtainable and they both have their merits? Aside from perhaps being slightly ahead on the technological curve relative to games which were multiplatform, why does it make a difference for other people?

What exactly makes an exclusive game worthy of being talked about? I notice the discussion on Vgcharts around games heat up if they are believed to be exclusive and die down if it turns out the game is multiplatform. This seems to be the reverse of what should happen. If the game was available to more people, then surely more people would want to talk about them?

But if it's not exclusive, you can't wave it in front of "their" faces, can you?

It is all about what makes your platform of choice unique. It gives people a sense of peace knowing that their purchase was not done in vain and they are getting something out of it.

Like drugs, exclusives make you feel better about yourself.

1. WOW

2.WOW

OT: when a game is exclusive it is expected to rise about multiplats because it is developed for a certain company, too add exclusive games is what can make or break a system....a chunk of the reason why the ps3 was not doing so well is because its exclusive line-up was not up to par with the competition in the beginning. its an obsession because its sets the xbox360 and ps3 apart, when it comes to the games library. Giving console owner "x" the ability to state that thier console is better than owner "y" console depending on the exclusives.

Arguing about console exclusives keeps simple minded people feeling good about themselves. Just sit back, relax, read the posts, and laugh your ass off.

That seems rather silly. I purchased a PS3 because I wanted to know I would have access to Gran Turismo among other games. Now I have access to that game I don't think of it as exclusive because I know I have access to it once it releases. I wouldn't expect people who purchased other consoles to have the same desire to play the game that I do. So how would that work? It would be like going to a resteraunt and jeering to the other patrons that I have the fish when they clearly wanted other dishes.

That is, demonstrably, a poor analogy. Many of the people who get worked up over these things don't see things in terms of "I can get X," but rather the world is made up of "can 'they' get X?"

It's strictly and "us" against "them" thing, and scoring a good exclusive is akin to hitting a home run. Were you not around when Final Fantasy XIII went multi-platform? Do you recall the flip-flopping about the new console Metal Gear when it was a 360 exclusive one minute, and multi-platform the next? Remember how exclusive titles like Haze and Lair were hyped way out of proportion?

You asked why the obsession with exclusives. I'm telling you what the obsession is all about.

This is not true, see FFXIII. Interest for this game never died and most - if not all - threads about this game still seem to be made by PS3 owners.

Public interest for a game doesn't have anything to do with exclusitivity in my opinion, it has to do with the popularity of an established and popular franchise (Zelda, GT, Halo, FF, COD, GTA etc.) or the anticipation for a new franchise, which looks very promising from previews, e.g. first Mass Effect game, first Bioshock game or Scribblenauts.

Well I guess then the fact that I never cared for either Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy played into my not knowing about that. I come and go from this site quite frequently so its very possible I missed them as sometimes I don't come back for months at a time. I don't remember Lair but I actually found Haze to be enjoyable as it had four player split screen.

Thanks for taking the time, I understand now.
