But if it's not exclusive, you can't wave it in front of "their" faces, can you?

That seems rather silly. I purchased a PS3 because I wanted to know I would have access to Gran Turismo among other games. Now I have access to that game I don't think of it as exclusive because I know I have access to it once it releases. I wouldn't expect people who purchased other consoles to have the same desire to play the game that I do. So how would that work? It would be like going to a resteraunt and jeering to the other patrons that I have the fish when they clearly wanted other dishes.

That is, demonstrably, a poor analogy. Many of the people who get worked up over these things don't see things in terms of "I can get X," but rather the world is made up of "can 'they' get X?"

It's strictly and "us" against "them" thing, and scoring a good exclusive is akin to hitting a home run. Were you not around when Final Fantasy XIII went multi-platform? Do you recall the flip-flopping about the new console Metal Gear when it was a 360 exclusive one minute, and multi-platform the next? Remember how exclusive titles like Haze and Lair were hyped way out of proportion?

You asked why the obsession with exclusives. I'm telling you what the obsession is all about.

Well I guess then the fact that I never cared for either Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy played into my not knowing about that. I come and go from this site quite frequently so its very possible I missed them as sometimes I don't come back for months at a time. I don't remember Lair but I actually found Haze to be enjoyable as it had four player split screen.

Thanks for taking the time, I understand now.
