Forums - PC Discussion - Contoller/Console better for FPS than KB+Mouse/PC?!?

So at a family re-union this weekend I got into a debate with a hardcore X-box phreak about Console FPS VS. PC FPS.

It kind of went like this..

Family member: "Consoles are way better for FPS, they are more challenging. Using a Keyboard and mouse is like cheating. Anyone can move a mouse around to point at someone and kill them. The controller is way better"

Me: "Are you kidding me, FPS belongs on the PC. How is it like cheating because you are more accurate. Since you are more accurate so is everyone else who is skilled and it makes the skill level variance larger."

It basically went back and forth like this with my points and counterpoints and so on.

*edit: took out Halo comment*

I, as a huge PC gamer do believe the KB+M is the superior format for FPS for many reasons. I will be happy to give you all the reasons if you just ask. So here I am. That little debate I had got me wondering what other people think on the issue.

So, what do you guys think. Is the KB+M the superior format for FPS games? If so, I would like to hear your reason. If you think a console controller is somehow better, I would like to hear those arguments as well. Let's try to keep this civil and without trolling. Also let's keep the subject on FPS games only. I know that there are many games to which KB+M is the worse choice.

Keyboad and mouse is by far the better option.

I fail to see how it could be considered cheating as all players have the option to use a Keyboard and mouse. Of course it being a PC they could also use a console controller for many games.

The downside to PC gaming especially FPS is cheating something I would imagine is near non existent on the console.

I Like the controller better, I'm not into keyboard and mouse. But I would not say one is better then the other, its what do you like better and play better on?, According to your answer , you should go with what you are the most comfortable with, I think you get an advantage with keyboard and mouse, its a bit quicker to make a shot, but whatever you enjoy the most, I don't think there is a better or best opction, its whats the best for you.

Yes it's better, but let's no go there. Love the "it's tougher with a controller 'cause it's harder to aim" argument. Hugely flawed, but very amusing. Why not wear gloves too? That would really increase the challenge.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

That's a laughable assertion. Some people may PREFER it, and that's all nice and dandy, but "better" in terms of control etc.? No contest.

The ONLY argument I've ever heard in favor of controller that makes sense, is that with the controller, an analog stick will offer better movement options than fixed keys. This is true, but the fact that aiming is so much better with a mouse than the other analog stick completely negates any benefits.

Anyway, M/KB >>> Dual analog. Did you explain to your family member that console FPS's have auto-aim to make up for the shitty controls?

I don't play PC much but it was and is extremely accurate. I enjoy console FPS more right now but KB/M is better. It doesn't take away enjoyment or anything like that though.

Well I think it depends which FPS you are talking about. I was a huge Q3Arena player on the PC. Obviously I couldn't imagine playing quake any other way. Its a fast twitch shooter that you need a mouse and keyboard for. On the other hand I couldn't imagine playing Halo without a controller. I think the faster FPSs like Unreal Tourney and Quake should be kept on the PC while the console oriented shooters (Halo, Gears) should be played with a controller.

Yes Gears is a tps but its a shooter so i'm putting it in the argument.

I thought this argument was settled a long time ago. Anyone that can't admit that keyboard+mouse is better is simply in denial. And as max power said, did you mention that console games need auto-aim to make up for the crap controls making it less about skill than on PC where it truly is your reactions that determine your performance.

Yes, I countered with the auto-aim/Aim Assist of console games. I also mentionted how the hit boxes on consoles are larger than on PC's to also account for the lack of accuracy on on the controller/dual analog.
