Forums - Sales - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sales on PC Disappointing sold only 170K

Not a surprise. The title had a very bad press on PC and I really don't know why IW spent the money the did for the whole matching making element as it was always looking to be a waste of effort.

Much as I still game on PC, there are titles I simply don't bother with now, this being one of them. No SDK, dedicated servers, etc. makes this simply redundant for me. I suspect it probably sold okay through Steam, but nothing like the console sales.

I found MW2 to be disappointing for my tastes anyway, having bought it on PS3 for my son. He played through the SP and thought it was weak after MW, however he does enjoy the MP, but even there he's now split between playing the original or MW2.

I really felt MW2 was a money exercise and nothing more. The SP is weak and not worth it and while the online is great, you're basically paying a fortune for a revamp of something you already have if you have CoD4.

Activision must love it though. Can't wait to see MW3's even shorter SP campaign with even nuttier story and how they re-sell more or less the same MP all over again.

I does annoy me to know Bobby's laughing at the masses though as he snorts cocaine off some whore's breasts, amazed how many people, particularly in the US/UK, will pay through the nose to have the same thing sold to them again and again with minimal refinements.

My, I'm feeling cynical this morning!

It's not exactly a suprise. Why would anyone bother with the PC version after they removed so many features that are standard in PC gaming and then charged more for an inferior product. From what I hear the pirated copy is actually superior to the retail version as people have cracked it to include dedicated servers etc.

2 things are going to happen now. Either:

1. They learn and release a better copy on PC for MW3

2. They decide not to bother with MW3 on PC

Hopefully, it'll be the former. I wouldn't be suprised if it's the latter though.

Didn't we have the same conversation about crysis?

It sold little in the first NPD report and overall did very well. Its doubtless that this will be any different. However it certainly is a lower then expected numbers. But that hardly is surprising considering the negative campaigns against it.

If I remember rightly, it sold very little at first because it only had 1 week of data at retail.

That could well be. It was a long time ago lol. How many weeks of sales does this report include?

Well it was released 10th November, so probably about 3 weeks. I think Crysis sold a little above 80K first week.

The issue with Crysis as well was people simply didn't understand the sales pattern for a title like that.  It was marketed and known as a high end PC show off title.  Initial sales are low and to that crowd, then over time, as the general tech level increases with upgrades, more and more then get the game over time, giving it a much less front loaded profile.

Part of the problem is so many people look at the high profile front loaded console titles and simply assume that defines the only successful profile, and therefore anything that doesn't fit is judged a failure one or two weeks in.  Daft, but there you go.

Very true, it's still the benchmark game to have in terms of graphics. Anyone who upgrades or buys a new PC will want to test out Crysis, especially with all the vids on youtube of it being run @ high res with all effects on V.high. I get the feeling a lot of PC titles are like that, but sales data for PC games is pretty scarce, especially factoring in digital downloads.

I mean, Counterstrike source, Half-Life and Starcraft are all still selling.

So how's that anti-piracy thing working out for them? lol...

Serves 'em right for removing dedicated servers thus delivering a sub-par online experience.
