Where, exactly, are you getting that impression? Perhaps they simply don't like her music.
I'll draw a comparison to David Bowie. Many people thought the guy was down right weird and bizarre (he gave them plenty of reasons). Regardless, he was respected immensely among his peers and music fans alike. Janis Joplin - another interesting character. Far from what we'd consider ordinary at the time, yet well loved and respected.
There's no doubt you'll always get the conservative detractors regardless of your musical prowress, but I'm simply not buying that being any more the case as it was for others who had eccentric personalities in similar posistions.
