Also, I bloody *hate* great whites with a passion! The other 'dangerous' animals I'm fine with, no problem, but the 17,000 great whites in the game? Ugh. |
From the interview IGN did with the developers (which is funny because they ignore most of the questions) it seems they felt the need to make EO more 'gamey'. Probably because that was the number 1 complaint, that it wasn't a game. The whole idea of the pulsar seems to be to add a more traditional game like element (does every game have to be a shoot now?) as well as more of a story focus and treasure hunting.
I just hope they didn't take that too far. I play EO to relax. I don't mind optionally shooting fish to heal them nor warding off the odd dangerous predator as that adds a little realism the last one lacked but I wouldn't want to be constantly watching my back and always shooting sharks.

Yeah, well in that they succeeded, with the story (which contains some puzzles and such as well) and the shooting and treasure hunting and limited oxygen and such. It's definitely a lot more fleshed out. And I like it.
The only thing I don't like about the game is the great whites. Obviously the 17,000 thing I said wasn't to be taken seriously, but there are quite a few, and they're not limited to a single map. Luckily, on maps, they do stay within designated areas. Other dangerous animals such as piranhas, electric eels and caimans aren't that agressive, and you can easily swim by without them constantly attacking you. In fact, I don't think I've ever used the pulsar on anything besides sharks. In the river area, I can comfortably float around and take my time scanning the bottom for treasure, while being surrounded by 100+ piranhas without a care. I'd have preferred ot if the GW's would only attack you when you get really close to or threatened them, but alas.
If it were just a few that'd be okay, but there's tons of them in the game. Luckily not everywhere, but still. Whenever you come within, say, 10 meters (what is that, like 33 ft?) or so of them, they start badgering you. I never bother with the pulsar anymore, 'cos it's not really helpful. It's pretty slow to take it out and aim underwater, so if there's a whole flock of great whites (which there will be, there's always a lot of them around, never just one or two), you're being attacked by more as you try to zap one. Furthermore, the pulsar's calming effect will only stay active as long as you stay close to the sharks. If you swim off (which you will, why would you stay in 1 place ), they snap out of it and will go for you again. I just swim by them now, as long as you keep on the move they won't hit you, but that makes it really annoying when you want to check out other fish, scan for treasure or whatnot.
There are a few other dangerous sharks, but they're usually alone, thus manageable. But great whites seem to like to move in schools. Or flocks. Or herds. And when you return to a shark-infested area at night, guess what, there are even more sharks! XD They're really the only thing that bothers me in the game. But make no mistake, it's by no means a game-breaking experience, at all. Just an annoyance, imo. The game's absolutely fantastic and I love it to bits. Plus, it's still mainly about taking things slow and doing whatever, whenever you like (apart from the obligatory story bits). You won't have to be constantly watching your back, as like I said, they do stay within certain rather smallareas, and if you get out of reach, they'll leave you alone. And you will very soon learn exactly where the GW's are located, believe me.
Wow, look at my wall of text there. Sorry.
