Forums - Nintendo - why do people/game journelists keep calling mario a casual game?

This casual/hardcore thing is growing way out of proportion when applied to games. I've seen people play Wii Sports in a more hardcore way than most people play FPS games.

Hardcore/casual is about GAMERS, not games. And the same gamer can play some games in a more hardcore way, and others more casually.

I don't think NSMB Wii is a casual title, nor is it hardcore. It is just a game (a franchise probably) which appeals to hardcore and casual gamers at the same time. And my guess is that the game was designed to do just that.

It appears to me that calling games "casual" is becoming more and more of an deprecative term. So I feel that by calling the Wii and it's games casual (wether they really are casual or not) is just a way of Analysts and perhaps the so called "hardcore gamers" to express their disapproval for Nintedo's strategy (and success).

I think this is the case because a lot of people find this success sort of illegitimate because it is not based on what has been viewed as the business standard (superior technology, graphics... higher complexity etc.) in the past.

i dont think i called it a hardcore title.. it just doesnt make sence to why its in the casual catigory, when it should be in the platformer/adventure even if it apeals to both core and non-gamers

New super mario bros is a good example. In Japan you will see many on the train play a level in the train but probably never finish it. While their are also a group who will finish the game and get everything out of it.  The thing is that probably most people who bought it belong in the casual audience that's why some call it a casual game.  That has always been the power of the nintendo, would games as brawl sold that well without Nintendo characters in it?  I think Miyamoto even said it, my games are targeted for everyone but gamers can join them aswell, that is the power of nintendo'.

And so does a good bit of the media, which is part of the point, if Mario is casual aka mainstream then so is WoW.  Honestly I hate the terms cause most of the media outlets use the term casual to put down games/consoles/gamers as less than them, when in fact we're all a bit "casual" at something, like I'm a "casual" Left 4 Dead player, I pop it in for a few minutes have a game with friends and turn it off, and I'm really happy with it.  Most gaming media outlets have their head stuck up their ass sadly.
