He probably did this:
Jump into an open-topped box on the back of the hero.
Moving left aims left
Moving right aims right
R1 (grab) a lever/whatever to shoot.
There was probably a jetpack in the box.
Very well made, but explainable.

People have been doing stuff similar to this since launch. There are some SHMUPs which are actually slicker than this (I know this isn't done yet).
