Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been struck in the face and knocked to the ground at a political rally in Milan.

Video footage showed Mr Berlusconi, 73, with blood on his lips as he was whisked away from the scene in a car.

The BBC's Maxine Mawhinney and Duncan Kennedy explain events surrounding the incident.

I really dont know this man... so I just hope for the best of him... I freakin hate violence... I guess im just your usual pacifists...

probably an Inter fan...

How did someone manage to get close enough to the PM to hit him?

Unless he pulled a Tiger Woods, and the woman couldn't hit 'em with a golf club.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

He has some pretty bad reputation, but some 10 years ago his TV channels were my only source of plentiful anime (I actually speak some decent Italian because of that today)... so that has remained as my sole image of the man.

I'm a pacifist too, but this man has had some kind of attack coming for a long time now, he has a bad reputation.

What kind of security holes let someone like that in? Did they hire the people that let the uninvited couple into the white house?

Some pacifist.

If this happened to every single world leader and banker maybe many of our problems would be solved.
