19 and i've never needed to have a job. Though, next year I'm probably going to get paid to do some English tutoring in Japan while at school.

I've had a job since I was 11. Plus I did car washing in my spare time for a few years.

Why are you guys bashing him? He comes in with an issue and you're tearing him apart. No wonder he has no motivation. *** like you probably have been speaking to him in the same manner you are!

Would you rather I say something like this?

It's perfectly all right you've never had a job, have no experience, can't do your homework, and failed all your midterms, something will absolutely come your way!  The job market is wonderful right now and I have every bit of confidence that someone will find you and you'll have your pick of jobs come graduation!  There might be people that have better grades than you, but nobody at all looks at GPA, it's all about positive attitude and *nothing* else.

No, a middleground would be much better. For example:

"Although you've been having a tough time in school, I'm sure that if you're able to prioritize more efficiently next semester you'll do well. It's very difficult to find a stable, desirable job in this tough economy, but if you persevere and are willing to work your way from the bottom up, you'll reach your goals."

Being an ass doesn't help people stay motivated. Ask anyone with abusive parents or bosses.

Meh, what can I say, life isn't sunshine and puppy farts and neither am I.  Not only do I believe that the above statement will motivate nobody but I can't help it-- I'm blunt.

I could be totally nice and pleasant and blow smoke up his ass but that doesn't really get him anywhere. 

Truth is:

• he likely doesn't have a good GPA
• he has no experiences what-so-ever
• probably has never even atttempted to write an actual resume
• has probably never talked or at least listened to his advisor
• ignores every email his school sends him about career fairs

All that together is a recipe for disaster.  It isn't hopeless for him but he's just going in against a serious disadvantage against every else.  I have no idea what he wants to do so can't say anything there but there aren't a lot of jobs out there and they are going to the people that have some sort experience, people who not only pass their classes but have a 3.5+ GPA, and people who actually try.

After a few months he'll finally realize finding a real job will be hard so he'll go work for McDonald's, The Gap, Gamestop, or whatever but sad thing there is he will be too qualified and the 16 year olds will get it before him.

Like I said, it isn't hopeless for him but things don't also look good if he ever wants something above minimum wage. He's 22 and it's time to grow up.

IDK, both of you don't lie, but he offers some sort of solution and hope of solving his problems, while you give no such things.

Whatever though, this guy is an attention whore, just like you pointed out in the beginning.

I offered the best advice I could possibly give him in my second post of this thread.  Without knowing anything else about him, there really isn't much more I can give him.

Weird, I've tried job searching over the summer and there was never any applications that asked for my GPA..., uh, guess you're talking about jobs that require degrees...?
