No, a middleground would be much better. For example:
"Although you've been having a tough time in school, I'm sure that if you're able to prioritize more efficiently next semester you'll do well. It's very difficult to find a stable, desirable job in this tough economy, but if you persevere and are willing to work your way from the bottom up, you'll reach your goals."
Being an ass doesn't help people stay motivated. Ask anyone with abusive parents or bosses.
