Holy sh*t cgkc17, you don't have a PS3. Does that mean you are going to buy FFXIII for the 360.
I thought I was the only one (
sobs in happiness)!!!!

Obsidian is better than Bioware? Yeah....I dare you to put up Alpha Protocol up against Mass Effect 2. Both will be great, but Mass Effect is worlds beyond Alpha Protocol from where I am standing. Both are better than most JRPG's coming out next year. |
....I'll be glad to do that when they're out, I guess?
Why in God's name would I compare games that haven't been released yet?
Why not just compare two contemporary games by the companies: KotOR and KotOR2? There's a good argument you could make for the former, if you wanted.
Seriously though, seriously
Don't comapre games that haven't been released yet, it just isn't cricket
I thought this thread was going to be some equalizing thread where people talked about liking both WRPGs and JRPGs. Instead...we choose between a WRPG and JRPG being better than each other?
Frankly, I haven't played Mass Effect yet, so I can't say if I'm hyped for Mass Effect 2. Though I like some Bioware games (already getting majorly hyped for Star Wars: The Old Republic).
On the flip side, I'm not getting at all hyped for FFXIII. Out of every FF game yet, it seems to be the most which is taking the most from previous games, as well as other RPGs made before it. Out of all the trailers, gameplay videos and information I have seen for the game, I have yet to see one original gameplay concept, setting concept or even plot point that strikes me as original in any way. Its almost as if this game, more than any FF game before it, is just a hodgepodge of past movie, RPG and Final Fantasy concepts mashed together into one massive big budget game. And that's not interesting me in the least. I can name 10 RPGs I'm looking forward to, and FFXIII just isn't on the list, despite its huge production values and namesake.
So with that, I'd probably have to say, I'd be more inclined to play Mass Effect 2, just to try my hand at a new RPG. But to expand on your question, I don't think FFXIII is the end all of JRPGs. And frankly, I have a laundry list of those I'm waiting for. Such as Dragon Quest VI, IX and X, Lufia Estpolis, Ninokuni: The Another World and heck, I'm getting rather interested in the upcoming Final Fantasy Gaiden. Even that looks to be breaking more ground than FFXIII.

Have you seen the videos for Mass Effect and Alpha Protocol? Compare them please, especially if you've played the first Mass Effect and seen the work they've done on it graphically, gameplay-wise and fixed the glitches from the last game.
| Mahorosan said: well...I already got the FFXIII PS3 bundle on preorder and ME2 on preorder but if I could only have one, then I'd probably go with ME2. I really really liked the first mass effect, and I'm generally not a fan of Tetsuya Nomura or the FFX team. The only reason I even decided to jump on XIII right away is because I actually did enjoy the demo. |
Since when did you play the demo?

The reason for some bias is because people who only have PS3's or Wii owners who side with JRPG's only are coming into the thread.
I totally agree with you about FFXIII. There is nothing groundbreaking about it. Versus is probably going to be the groundbreaking game but we haven't seen footage of it. The Japanese are definitely losing the creativity they used to once dominate with.
@S.T.A.G.E
I agree somewhat with your last phrase, JRPG's haven't had the impact that they had in past years.
But to say that they lost creativity is not entirely accurate as well, you just need to take a look at what Demon's Souls, Lost Odyssey and The World Ends With You to see that there's still creativity and originality in them.

Or maybe people actually like Final Fantasy because they think its a good franchise? Why do you downplay other people's tastes as if they don't matter? And on the subject of bias; a person with a Mass Effect avatar who clearly dislikes JRPG's is not exactly what the OP was looking for. He wanted to see if it'd be a hard choice for people who were fans of both genres, you obviously aren't so your choice is simple.
I enjoy both genres myself, I just don't think ME is all its cracked up to be at all (I played the PC version). I'll get the sequel for sure though!
I prefer JRPGs quite easily, but I do definitely love a bunch of WRPGs.
This isn't a real question for me though, of course you choose Final Fantasy XIII.
