You got it wrong Carl....
Gamers who loved old Final Fantasy games agree.

Who cares about western reviews for a japanese game?

If Lost Odyssey was PS3 exclusive, I CAN ASSURE YOU it would be praised as the "game you should buy a PS3 for". Playstation fans (who loved PS1 and PS2 JRPGs) waited so long for a game like this this gen... (Soon FF13).

In 2007, if Lost Odyssey was released on PS3, it would have been called "Game of the Year" by the long-time playstation JRPG userbase...

Sadly for them, it was released on the 360. So instead of buying a 360 and expand their game collection... they prefered to downgrade the game on forums and stuff... Bitter behavior.

Sad but true.
Brand loyalty creates injustice.

I loved every FF game up to X-2. Lots.

And Montana said it all perfectly...

@Carl - As far as comparing game quality goes, Metacritic and gamerankings mean absolutley nothing. This is true with practically every game, but even moreso with JRPGs.

I'm going to have to agree with neoraf here and say that the critics dropped the ball on this one...HARD. Lost Oddysey has the production values and gameplay of a AAA game.

I am a person who favors the PS3, but Lost Oddyssey is. Not only the best JRPG, but possibly the best rpg of this gen so far.

Please elaborate further. I'd like to know why this is.

I loved old Final Fantasy games, lots of them. I loved the first two, I loved 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and so on. And I don't like Lost Odyssey all that much. And besides, what does it matter if the reviews are western or if the game is Japanese? A review is a review regardless. It's not like western reviewers are incredibly biased if Japanese games like Resident Evil 4 and Super Mario Galaxy are some of the best reviewed games of all time. So stop making up these BS excuses. You create these hypotheticals of Lost Odyssey being a PS3 exclusive and receiving a ton of praise, but it didn't happen. It never happened, so creating a hypothetical is pointless. The only thing is serves to do is to create another poor argument from you on how anyone who disagrees with it being the best Japanese RPG of this generation must be ruined by system bias. I have all the consoles this generation, with the 360 being my favorite, and I still don't think Lost Odyssey is anywhere close to being the best JRPG. And I get a lot of crap for hating on the game, so let it be known that I'm not hating on it here. I'm just stating the truth. It's not the best JRPG this gen. Tales of Vesperia and several handheld titles beat it handily. It's a decent RPG with some strengths, but you're overrating it highly and you know it. And Lost Odyssey is not Final Fantasy, and you know it. Let these two series stay separate. While you're at it, cut the BS and learn to accept that other people may have different opinions than you for legitimate reasons.

Is it just me, or do the bolded part and the underlined part contradict each other..? I agree that neoraf may be going overboard with defending the game, but how can you definitively say that Lost Odyssey is not the best JRPG this gen and then go on to scold him for ignoring the opinions of others?

I don't know man, there probably were some contradictions. I was just making a long, angry rant. And my main point was that he was pretty much putting down anyone else who disagreed with him and insulting them, which I didn't appreciate at all.

A lot of critics felt that it was dated in a lot of aspects. I personally loved the Battle system and ring creation. However the level cap at each dugeon and high random encounter rate, I could have done without. On a technical side, the game is beautiful but it struggles with its framerate way too often to be considered AAA. Also the inclusion of Cooke and Mack could have been left out. I understand they had to bring out a softer side of Kaim, but honestly they were very annoying.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

I don't really want to insert myself further into this argument, but I have to say that Lost Odyssey probably had one of the lowest enemy encounter rates out of any JRPG that uses random encounters that I've ever played...

When compared to past JRPGs then yeah. But to the ones of this gen it does

Well... Valkyria was popular enough to spawn a Anime and a Sequel, in Japan... Where Lost Odyssey didn't do very well at all.

Also, word of mouth has propelled its sales a LOT.

Lost Odyssey is good, yes... But is it as good as Valkyria? I really, really dont think so.

I might make a thread on it...
