Xbox marketing exec Aaron Greenberg recently told Gamasutra, "I feel confident that there's nothing that will compare in size, Halo: Reach will be the biggest game of 2010." Now Microsoft's over-confidence aside, we can understand why Mr Greenberg would make such a claim but there are a handful of titles which could challenge for the top spot.
Call of Duty 7: Only a few publishers in the world can rival Microsoft for advertising spend and even though this title will be missing Infinity Ward's game crafting prowess there's no doubt that Activision will be pushing the next Call of Duty extremely hard. Even though World at War paled in comparison to Modern Warfare 2, we expect Treyarch to raise their game for this one.
Medal of Honor: Remember the days when Allied Assault rocked your world? Well EA wants you remember those days when Call of Duty was simply an also-ran, but this time they are abandoning the World War Two setting and instead electing for modern day Afghanistan. We aren't sure how much faith there is out there for this well overdue reboot, but we are hoping EALA can pull out all the stops.
Old Republic: What's this? An MMO challenging one of the world's most well known shooters? Well yes actually and we'll tell you why. Star Wars has all the pulling power of Master Chief and combine this with a monthly fee of £12.99 and this is sure to make absolutely millions. This has all the makings of a WoW beater and as a result this may become the most valuable franchise in the whole of gaming.
APB: The world is already hankering for more GTA action and RealTime Worlds are hoping this title can fill the void. Brainchild of the GTA's original creator David Jones, this guy understands what makes a great gaming experience and if EA allocate the appropriate marketing spend then there's no reason why this online version of cops and robbers can't be absolutely massive.
Final Fantasy XIII: Japanese gamers are already enjoying this one and judging from early reviews it's a return to the series best. Few games can cross the genre divide as well as this blockbuster RPG and if XIII can rival VII in its magnitude, memorable characters and interesting plot then it could be a title to watch out for. Also it's the first time this franchise has appeared on a Microsoft and Sony console at the same time, which will make the western launch something to look forward to.
The more attentive of you will notice that there aren't any Nintendo titles on the list. We would have put in a new Brain Training, Professor Layton or anything Mario related for DS, but so far the 'big N' are yet to announce anything significant for the world's best selling platform.
Obviously Halo Reach will be plastered over plenty of billboards, magazines and websites when it launches next year, but that doesn't mean it will necessarily be the biggest title. That particular accolade is still up for debate.
