I think number are wrong. Wii> HD just doesnt happen anymore. It hasnt for a good while dont know why it would suddenly start now

Are you being ironic?

@BHR-3:

It topped a million units in every week in December? I thought that it did not, in point of fact.

Sorry.  I was focused on the Americas.  Where it seems unlikely to me that the Wii > HD.   Wii always close to HD but just a bit under it.  Why the change this week?  I expect adjustments at some point

I don't get this logic. If there has been a change, ioi received data that there was a change.

Thus, I would say that if a week just follows the pattern of previous weeks, it's more likely that there will be an adjustment, than if the newest week differs from the pattern.

If you use your logic, no patterns would ever be broken, whereas we are in fact seeing loads of patterns breaking, that we didn't expect to break. In other words, I think your logic is flawed.

I think one prediction I've made about this holidays will be true: 360 2009 > PS3 2008.

I predicted Wii would only have 4 weeks over 1 million, but that required this Wii to drop below 1 million this week. It didn't so it will have 5x 1 million weeks this holiday. It's mostly up YOY because of the triple release in Japan, but not entirely. If you take of 50K for the Japan spike it's still just up on 2008, so great job there.

Tight in Americas 360 vs PS3.

Wow those are some pretty good sales. Really PSP is the only one I could be seeing an issue with but it's holding up in that 300k range with actually a small increase from last week. 360 sales have small drops as well. Now DS and Ps3 had some huge drops but those sales for both are still very very strong.

But I guess the story for everyone is Wii didn't drop but increased. Of course the PSP did it as well, but it is a little more exciting when you are in the million range haha. Indeed it is mostly coming from a not so large BF week increase so smaller dropoffs but also huge success in Europe/Others right now. That Black Wii along with NSMB Wii is doing wonders in the region. Tie that in with the game succeeding everywhere else in the world and really giving a good reason to buy the Wii this year and it is set to have a great holiday season.

Overall sales were amazing this week even when we just came off Black Friday week. Really don't think any system lost out this week and it shows we are set to have a great holidays. Indeed PSP might not be anywhere near that of DS, but it is still showing it can put out some sales. And although PS360 gap is kinda big, 360 still making itself important while PS3 makes strides in Japan and Europe. All while DS and Wii continue explosive sales 5 and 3 years into their lifecycle. Good week and can't wait to see the software.

Man I am hoping PS3 sells 1 million during FFXIII release.

I was expecting more holiday boost for all.

Patterns get broken due to certain reasons.  Such as game launches, price cuts, special deals from stores.  These things justify a change ina pattern.  Normally a change like this doesnt just happen without a reason behind it.

Your logic is that you simply trust the numbers more than I do.   I simply require more reasoning that just believing the numbers for fact.

This week has followed Black Friday's enormous PS3 sales, where the console sold massive amounts due to bundles / deals. I think it's likely that last last week's huge sales hurt this week's sales. I mean, going by NPD data, on Black Friday week the PS3 outsold its previous November weeks (~90k average) by 5x over. People that were planning to buy a PS3 picked it up then.

The X360 was also higher than usual due to Modern Warfare 2, and the Walmart deals earlier.

Basically, I'd say the sales of the HD consoles were inflated (compared to the Wii), and the effects are finally wearing off. Honestly, I think we'll see it favor the Wii even more from this point on (until Jan), especially with the Wii's Walmart deal.

Your argument is fair and based of reason other than just simple believing the numbers.  Are you arguing inflation or saturation or both?

I do still disagree that the PS3 and 360 have been affected due to a little saturation after BF.  If anything supposedly PS3 saw shortages for a little while as it sold out at many places.  This would then argue that demand was not met and no saturation should occur.

I also disagree against BF inflation argument.  As sure there were many deals for all consoles more for the PS3 and 360 this would give a higher rise for that week which would explain a HD > Wii if that was against the trend but it wasnt.  It was just following the same pattern we have seen all year.  HD > Wii has been a yearly trend not just a 1 week during BF.  So you cant argue a 1 week inflation argument when its been a yearly issue.

Good point on PS3 shortages. I'm not exactly sure how things went down that week, though. Were normal PS3 deals (no BF deals) sold out as well? I guess I'm arguing inflation.

As for breaking the HD > Wii trend, I'd put that on the recent happenings - Wii's price cut, and more importantly, NSMB Wii. Since the price cut, the Wii has outsold (or equaled) HD consoles for most weeks. The exceptions are the Uncharted 2 release, the 360 Walmart deal, Modern Warfare 2 release, and Black Friday. Now that all of these are out of the way, the Wii shines, especially due to NSMB Wii, which pushes more consoles over time (especially over the holidays), as opposed to on release.

Either way, if you don't buy these arguments, there's not much that we can do besides wait for more credible numbers... I expected PS3 a bit higher and Wii a bit lower, though I think Wii > HD regardless (just not by 100k 75k, which is a surprise).

PS3 is taking others by the end of the year.

It's going to be interesting to see software sales this week...nice numbers for weekly sales of consoles, but they make money off game sales.
