Forums - PC - Windows 7 Ultimate Impression

Yesterday I Installed the new Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate.

First when i opened the box i noticed both versions were included a DVD with 32 Bit version and a DVD with the 64 Bit version. This was nice to see.

I thought the installation went a lot better then previous windows versions. A New installation took about 20 minutes. Also i like the way it directly sees extern hardware. (I had no need to install extern hardware). Connecting to internet already during installation was also a plus.

After the installation, i noticed the taskbar being a lot different. Big pictograms instead of the normal textbars. I saw you could edit it, But then it still seems a bit weird. I did not really like this much. (I tried both options) This also includes the grouping part.

Then i started to play with my windows. I like it how you can maximize your screen much easier.

I thought there Internet Explorer was optional and it would let you choose what browser you wanted to install. I did not see any of these options. I just got Internet Explorer 8 installed. Wich i thought was a bit weird. Since it was all over the news that you could choose type of browser.

One thing that did frustrate me was MSN Live Messenger. In Vista/XP/2000 etc. When you closed main list of ppl it would minimize into the right corner. Now it stays open on the taskbar instead.

Have not looked for much more. Since I did not have much time. But i am sure more will come up in time.

Overal Oppinion, I think Windows 7 (Ultimate) sure works good. I Give it a 7.5

What are your guys oppinions so far about Windows 7?

I find the icons in the taskbar to be absolutely genius. It works even better than the Mac's version.

It's faster than Vista, it looks better than vista, and everything is easier than in vista.

The search function actually works for once, and you can create meta-folders. Yeay!

I do find it weird that you cannot minimize MSN to the tray, but I don't fault Windows 7 for that.

On the whole I find Windows 7 to be the best windows experience yet, mainly due to its small but important interface upgrades.

Taskbar bothers me for chats. It's harder to flick between windows now. Also, I don't notice an improvement performance-wise from Vista (I have Vista on my desktop right now and 7 on my laptop).

Overall, this could have been another service pack. Unnecessary.

6/10 for pure taskbar annoyance.

Windows 7 is awesome.

For Live messenger... just unpin it from the task bar, I think that should work. (I'll check it now and update)

I really like the way the taskbar works, and the new shortcut keys are really nice (windows key + arrow keys does different things with your opwn window.... so if you have 2 windows open and you want to transfer files between them you can either use the mouse and drag to the left/right side of the screen (as seen in the adverts) or you can use windows+left, then either alt+tab or windows + tab to change to the other window, then windows + right to snap that one to the right. Then you have 2 windows open to move files between by drag and drop like before.
Windows+up will maximise, and down will minimise (there were shortcuts for this before, but these are easier to remember)

Taskbar is a tad weird at first but other than that, it's fantastic!

I am loving my trial version of window 7 so far, the installation was so fast compared to installing XP (which is what i used to have).
Now my computer boots up a lot faster, Windows 7 does really seem so much better to me, I feel like I have a new computer, and this is coming from a person who hates m$ lol.
I will give it a 9, waiting to see if it get's cluttered up in a couple of months tho, so this score could be reduced.

it's the future of handheld

what I have seen so far looks awesome. My father has it on his laptop.

It looks great, has some nice features and it didn't crash once so far. Personally, I do not know anything that could have been better.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Depends on your hardware.

Vista running on it's own though used up 1.4 GB of my RAM

Windows 7 used up 800MB

And how can it be harder to flick between windows? Use windows + tab, simple as anything... or for flicking between two open tabs you can use the old function (it's in XP) of alt+tab.
Or you can use the windows key plus various number buttons for programs that ar on your task bar... so for instance windows explorer is the first thing on my taskbar, so windows + 1 opens that, or if I have one open it will bring that window to the front, or if I have multiple windows explorer windows open I can cycle between them by pressing windows + 1 key all the time..... exactly the same thing for other stuff on your taskbar, so right now I have 2 firefox windows open, firefox is the second program on the taskbar so I can go directly to this one using windows + 2.... and to the next one by windows + 2 (twice)
(normally I would only have 1 FF window open though due to tabbed browsing, but the principle applies for all programs.... any that are not already pinned tothe taskbar will use the later numbers... so my taskbar currently has Windows Explorer, Firefox, MSWord and Excel pinned to it, but I have just opened MSN Messenger, which becomes the 5th program so windows + 5 will cycle through my messenger windows.

And I just checked messenger, it does seems to stay open for some reason... I remember before (in XP) it used to bring up a message that the program was still running even when you closed it, so it is probably something to do with that but it is a little irritating.... however there is a quick solution to closing messenger:

hold Windows + alt and press whichever number program it is in the taskbar (for me it is the 5th) then let go of all keys and press up, (which highlights the "close window") then enter.
There might me a setting in messenger that stops it staying open though, i'll check.

------

Alternatively tedster... if you unpin all the programs from the taskbar it behaves in exactly the same way as it does in XP. (why you would want that I don't know, but if you prefer it)

TWRoO, those shortcuts are really usable. Thanks for letting me know. :)

Didn't have a single problem yet.
Everything works very fast.

Those how don't like the new taskbar (including myself) just use this:
