Forums - Sony - Sony NOT Learning from PS3 Mistakes - 3D TV Plan Will Fail

I agree this is too early. Tons of people still don't even own HD TVs. What's next, a format to replace Bluray?

Thats exactly why its a good time to release that. a 3DTV also is a HDTV, if you wait for everyone to purchase a HDTV than theyll have to purchase another TV. A 3D ready HDTV is not a lot more expensive, so its a great timing as people will consider it when purchasing their first HDTV.

Well, as to that... we'll see. I'm not saying the strategy itself is bad, it's just that it might not be the best of ideas to go down that path right now, for them, considering the state Sony as a company has been in lately, and the economical state the world's in right now.

It isn't just sony. All the major TV manufacturers are pushing 3dtvs and it's not as expensive to make a tv 3d ready as we're lead to believe.

So I received press releases today saying that both ESPN and Discovery have plans to launch dedicated 3D channels. Sony and IMAX are apparently partnering with Discovery for their venture.

3D versions of rock concerts will rock.

3D concerts are for pussies. It defeats the whole point of being at a concert. That's why only crappy disney "musicians" do them (JB and HM/MC)

Also, will someone explain the difference between this "new" 3D and the 3D in Avatar that I just saw last week? I know the difference between the Red-and-blue ones and the "digital 3D" with the tinted sunglasses (like Avatar). What is the difference?

LCD and PLASMA at the time it was launched was also for far few people, costly, problematic and without much purpose. But the market for each was the HIGH end rich enthusiasts.

Only because you guys aren't the enthusiast doesn't mean it will fail.

Sony will market this for the enthusiasts, and will slowly bring the costs down as they manufacture more, until is mainstream.

The hardware cycle was always like these. The sooner Sony starts manufacturing it, the sooner they can learn how to bring costs down, for in 5 years when the mainstream start to want to buy, the will have the know how to build quality and cheap 3D HDTV.

The same can be sad about the OLED TV.... for now is enthusiasts only (11'' LOL) but soon will become the must have HTDVs.

Come on Sony. Maybe next gen. This gen just enjoy the Blu Ray success and keep selling HDTV's.

You kids make me laugh. Electronics companies always have to be on the cutting edge.

Some of you are ridiculous. You are probably the same people who said Sony was crazy for developing bluray. That will never catch on, DVD is still too new and bluray players are too expens... oh wait...

This idea may work out, or it may not, but it is a logical step forward. Of course it'll be expensive at first, but what isn't?

This is only my opinion.

Pfft. Someone has to innovate and take a few chances, and new technology will always be expensive when it first comes out. The sooner it is brought out, the sooner rich people will buy it at a high price (making up for, or at least mitigating, the money spent on R&D and the inevitably high early cost of production) and the sooner it will come down so that the rest of us can afford it. I'm glad that Sony's still ambitious. Technological progress in the world of consumer electronics would have been a lot slower if we'd have waited for everyone to get x before we brought out y.

Also, I'm amused by pb1285n's sig, since his post contained a lot more fact than opinion
